this isnt really about helping other people in the first place. it's helping you pause for a moment to realise you are buying shit every single day without really thinking about it. when there are days on which you buy nothing, like marlowe mentioned earlier, those are typically for entirely other reasons, mostly: having stocked up on one of those days where money didnt matter, or simply being too lazy to get off your ass. It really won't hurt anyone to stop and think about their consumer habits for just one single day per year. But look at everyone bitching about it. It's absolutely pathetic. |

intentions may be good, again, but it's sort of a half-hearted effort... one day a year simply isn't enough... if it's supposedly a sort of awareness campaign, then i don't think it's quite enough... all the power to grass roots campaigns, i just think it's more ritualistic (almost religious) than it is political. |

it's not about changing your habits for one day, but about being aware of them. Who knows, you might actually start consuming just a tiny bit less in the future, because you gave it some thought today. It's quite sad to see that pretty much everyone here has this 'can't be helped' 'its just the way things are' 'wont make a difference' attitude. If you apply that to living in general, i suppose it's a big reason for the mess we're in. Boxbob, you call it a half hearted effort, but why are you expecting others to make an effort that is supposed to come from every individual that consumes too much? |

What I find ridulous is people getting in loads of debt and working silly hours to buy a load of shit they don't even need. People should get out a bit more, enjoy socialising and public space. |

the only reason it hasn't happened already is that no-one gains from a dollar without any value. everyone benefits from a slow and silent devaluation of the dollar. it won't take much time till the saudi's see their bonds with the us don't help them one bit. (isn't it funny that recently they discovered that most foreign terrorists in iraq were saudi's? and hardly any from iran?) in 50 years people will read the history books and be surprised the us ever was a superpower. |

to be fair to the bush-administration: in a way they just had to go to war in iraq. they just had to restore the bonds between the dollar and oil after iraq (saddam) decided it was time to trade oil in euros. the "petrodollar" would really be disastrous for the us-economy. also interesting is that now that the russians are flirting with the euro as well, suddenly the us needs an excuse to place 'defensive' rockets on the eastern-european borders. seeing the way the us invaded iraq it's clear they tend to fight for their money. in the mean time the power behind their barking are fading however. soon it'll become clear the us needs international support to survive and is in effect not much more than a homeless on the corner asking for money. |

that's a cool article... This "petrodollar-petroeuro" conflict is essential to understand current affairs, although it's not the whole story. It was in 2002 or so that I first encountered this issue and wrote about it, in relation to Iraq, Venezuela and OPEC. Things haven't changed much since. also, what's crucial is to stop purchasing all these plastic containers and gadgets to the best of one's ability, because it's a real waste that goes into disposable material, plus it supports the oil cartels... |
