I don't get the point of it, or when it would be any more convinient than an actual book.
Can someone explain why this thing has been so popular. I just don't get it.

It's fucking terrible.
A good critique of its failings, written by a friend of mine, can be accessed at that link.

My friend has a PDA which he uses to read books on..he seems happy with it, and doesn't pay money to either download content (which is not necessarily illegal!) or to transfer it to his PDA.
This 'Kindle' looks pretty rubbish.

it saves lugging heavy books or a laptop around with you. I don't see it as a book replacement, more as something to complement books.

The name puts me off, but fair play for him drawing the Farenheit 451 connection. You Irish with your scholarly wordplay and sense of mischief mixed with an ever present threat of sphincter loosening violence, I like you, all of you.

i don't know, i think laptops will become so ubiquitous and/or lightweight that these kind of gadgets will be temporary... i could be wrong, technologies are a bitch to predict.

battery life is too short on laptop due to too much cpu horsepower.
kindle has a screen which uses "e-ink" so is lit by external light (like a book). it doesn't spit out photons at you like laptop screens.
I can see myself buying an ebook at some point in the future for sure. I think it is convenient for a number of purposes. I can think of industry uses where the appropriate document is downloaded prior to doing a task, etc.
I'm all for books, but for reference purposes I think carrying an ebook could be more appropriate sometimes.
Reading for pleasure, I would much rather have a bit of dead tree.

Dead things don't like that term; they prefer "Differently Energised".

books are ten a penny. this is stupid. like video phones. they've been plugging them since the 50's. we have the technology now, and still no one care.
