...have never made an ambient album? i think vltrmx21 is a
very good song.

They just make what sounds good, completely rejecting
intended genre placement, some parts in tri rep. are very
ambient I think, parts when the beats stop, especially the
ends of a lot of songs when they fade off.

I have always wanted to slow some Autechre music down and
play it ... must do that some day.

I can think of a bunch of tracks Autechre have done that,
when combined, could make a pretty decent ambient
'compilation' disk. I was thinking of actually doing that
sometime

Such ambient tracks (or partially ambient include):

-19 Headaches
-Melve
-Caliper Remote
-Drane 2
-Pule
-Nine
-Yulquen
-Piobms19
-Bronchusevenmx24
-Vletrmx21

Bronchusevenmx24 is fucking amazing

I would believe that to be true Cortex. I've always talked
of it as that.

I'd say I'd like Ae to do an ambient cd next but that
wouldn't work in their string of cds. The evolution of
Autechre wouldn't call for that. I only see them getting
more organic.

youre probably right. but maybe on an ep ou a 3rd peel
session... never know!

well, who says music with percussion isn't ambient? Amber is
very ambient I feel...

That's exactly what I was thinking Cortex. If history
repeats itself (and I'm sure it will), we won't be getting a
full album but an ep next. I really hope it's a Peel
Session...or something like Basscad or Cichlisuite where
they take a song and re-do it. A track off Confield that
would be cool remixed would be Uviol or Eidetic Casein. For
the latter call it the Eicas Remix EP. We can dream can't
we?

yeah, i know what you mean. but what exactly is ambient?
how is it defined?

offline Amonbrune from Vancouver (Canada) on 2002-03-22 20:15 [#00136586]

My prefered 'ambient' type is something that produces a
landscape or atmosphere that does't resemble music. An
example would be Bronchusevenmx24 where it appears to be
inside a cave or something.

Ambience is hard to describe or define cause there are too
many variences within itself. You can call Brian Eno's
piano pieces ambience...or you can call a washy sound with
noises ambience too.

maybe ambient is slow actions in time

Could be. The mathematics of syrup and molasses in the
cold.

i make a distinction between ambient techno and ethereal
ambient. the former can have percussion and more traditional
structure, the latter is the typical 'soundscape.'

the common trait is that ambient isn't meant to be actively
listened to, but sits in the background, even if the only
other thing you're doing is sitting and thinking. however it
isn't meant to be ignored; it should insert itself in the
periphery of your aural attention.

ambience is a sound or set of sounds that feels like a
physical presence (apparently)....depends on what tag you
then put onto it ie ambient tekno or ambient chocolate
brownies or even ambient pants?

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2002-03-22 21:41 [#00136676]

true ambient for me is something like On Land, that is full
of bird sounds, and frogs, and all that good stuff, yet it
still have music... it creates a landscape in your mind, a
place... and the music creates a mood for that place... it's
very cool... This album is so excellent in my opinion... it
just creates perfect images in your head of these
landscapes, and then the synth work, and music like that
creates these errie moods that fit perfectly with the
landscapes... it's excellent...

but then there is ambient with percussion (again I refer to
Passion) and it can have the same effect...

I consider most of Autechre's stuff ambient. Even tho it
usually has really intense beats and glitch.

yeah it's more about the mental stuff you get when listenig
to the music in act imo

yeah...to me theres true ambient...like brian eno, saw2,
biosphere, harold budd, lustmord etc... which is usually
really subtle and without beats and is meant to become part
of the environment...like spriggan and funkmaster said...
then theres like ambient techno, house, etc...like saw85-92,
monolake, vadislav delay, aspen, the orb, isan, atom heart,
b12, plastikman, artificial intelligence ara stuff,
etc...which is like ambient..but has beats mixed in...so its
intended more for listening to ...less for the background

and the latter is where i think amber and the garbage ep fit
in...

(damn i knew there was one more thing i wanted to write)

I'm pretty sure they're having a bunch of unreleased
material, completely ambientish. :-)
