So next year I may be getting some extra money to update my gear. I currently am running Live on a Mac, and I have a Waldorf Q, an old ASR-X Pro and some other assorted drum machines etc. When I bought the Q I was pretty into purist electronic stuff but that has changed.
What I am interested in is some sort of software sampler that has pretty advanced patch building options and a visual interface. I would like to be able to sample found sounds (voices, drones, etc) and be able to visually draw envelopes to bend, morph, blend, etc with synth patches and other found sounds. Something that had granular features would be a plus.
Has anyone seen or used something like this and have any recommendations? I know I can look on the internet but I'm interested in peoples experience.

Whatever wMw uses, which sounds like MS Paint with an audio plugin.

is that Metasynth? I've always wanted to mess with that as well as Architechture. I know a guy who knows a guy who was involved in developing both of those.

Yeah get Reaktor 5. It will do what you're asking for, plus a lot that you can't even imagine. You'll probably want to build your own instruments instead of using the ones installed by default - I find them unnecessarily complex, show offy and fiddly, and they don't suit my creative process. Expect to spend a month or two of evenings and weekends learning it. I can point you towards a few simple and good sounding patches to get you started.

just as fleetmouse said, if you spend the time to learn Reaktor 5 you can do anything imaginable with electronic music. I would HIGHLY suggest it, the learning curve is somewhat steep but it will pay off highly. Not to mention that it comes with a bunch of awesome synths/sample transformers/groove box's that you can use right when you get it.

Pure Data can do a lot with samples, it has visual envelopes and it free which is a big plus.

Puredata is excellent for advanced tinkerers but nowhere near as immediately usable as Reaktor. If you get Reaktor and download JWH's samplers from the user library you're all set for sample manipulation in your favorite host sequencer.
