the book is ten times more graphic, imagine those sex for drug scenes happening over and over in the book lol like most books its more detailed, however this is one of the few movies based on a book that did the book justice imo

Yeah...
Also might be worth reading/watching Last Exit to Brooklyn.... by the same author (Helbert Selby Jr...); can't recall who the film is by but it's good...similar kind of vibe but a bit less graphic...
As for RFAD...you gotta admit, it does hammer home the sheer power of film/video...easy to forget sometime when we're fed such sugar-coated views the vast majority of the time...
And I think people have these polarized views about it because they are simply not used to getting fully emotionally involved with a film...most films rely on that tension-resolution-etc etc structure; not a huge amount of resolution in Requim, just more & more tension, no standard boy-gets-girl neat ending...

Interesting to think of it in terms of tension-resolution which I usually associate with music. You're right, it was like a series of diminished chords crawling up your back with no relief! :-)
But you know, I really despise movies with predictable emotional structure, like "aw crap now I have to sit through this whole sequence where the hero is uncomfortable with the single mom's kid and they slowly form a bond" kinda stuff.
I did see Last Exit. Wasn't Jennifer Jason Leigh in it? My memories of it are blurry.
