Requiem for a Dream

I'm fairly jaded and I found the last 15-20 minutes
difficult viewing indeed. Watched it with a friend who's
going tthrough a rough patch... he would have been more into
a feelgood movie.

When I saw the name Hubert Selby Jr. in the credits I
thought, uh oh. This was the director's cut which I can only
imagine was heavier than the original release.

Yikes!

is this a horror movie or what?

Not really, actually. Just imagine seeing that rougher parts
for a little bit longer. I was surprised they called the
director's cut a 'cut'. They just kind of shortened the
length of certain scenes.

Excuse me, I am dumb. I had that whole thing backwards. I
thought you saw the 'edited version', not the director's
cut. That post really makes no sense now. : \

At the end when they're cutting back and forth between Ellen
Burstyn, Jennifer Connoly, *mumble* and *mumble*, man I was
feeling horrified and nauseous.

POWERFUL movie even if you have no real concept of what
addiction (esp drug) is all about.

i can imagine tho, if i knew someone like this i would find
it hard to watch this movie for entertainment (or
enlightenment) value!

My grandmother was a bit like the Ellen Burstyn character -
too much television and too many pills. She never went
psycho though she did get a tad weird at times.

I loved Burstyn's scene with her son at the kitchen table
when she was telling him how the promise of being on TV gave
her a reason to get up in the morning. It was so poignant,
like something from a Tennessee Williams play...

There was a British film about nuclear war called Threads.
It was so fucking horrific I felt physically ill and deeply
depressed for a day or two after seeing it.

Why do I like doing that to myself? #->

OMG ellen was AMAZING.....what an amazing actress. didn't
she win the best supporting oscar for that role? if not she
was ROBBED.

it's strange to think of it as entertainment....i mean it is
a movie so it is strickly based on that definition. but i
would not call it entertainment. more of a learning
experience. you LEARN what not to get into....ehehhehe

(i own the dvd....but i have yet to watch it again....have
to be in the right mood)

ahhhh i shoulda known YOU'd KNOW.....tee hee

i think we watch these movies to see how others go about
living.....to see a slice outta someone's life. i think
while a lot would say they could care less.....most people
are curious about other people and their lives. we're
NOSEY.....ahhahaha

it's a great learning experience for me, as i said this
particular movie is not in the entertainment realm for
me.....no way. great film however!

I saw this movie finially. IMO it was such an awful movie.
They wanted to make a trainspotting movie..... but ended up
making it more grotesqe and violent, minus the dark humor
and direction.

I just didnt dig it at all. If I want to see drug addiction
I can go to downtown hollywood after 9:00 pm and see it
first hand.

Movies to me are for hope, for a laugh, to scare you, to
make you cry......

I dont like the movies that just are dark and explicet just
for an excuse to be sick and violent.... and you end up
leaving the theater feeling like you want to vomit or
die....

Its ok I think to make a movie like that as long as you
throw in some humor... something....

hard to explain ... like a reprieve .. a break

just my opinion of course... I just didnt dig this one

I think we watch movies to watch movies. a visual and audial
spectacle that encapsulates fantasy and (hopefully)
interesting ideas and notions.

Does the DVD have commentary? That would just kill it for
me. "Blah blah blah, and then the cameraman farted this
particularly juicy fart and we all laughed...."

mm.. I reacted very badly to the film.. I was kind of in a
bad patch in my life when I saw it at a big international
film festival we have here each year.. I was right in the
middel of a HUGE cinema with an ENORMOUS screen..

I almost fainted during the last 10 minute sequence. I
couldn't take it.

that said, I do think its a good film. just because it made
me feel shit, doesn't make the film bad.

It's an Aronowski movie, so IF the DVD has some commentary,
you'll get a VERY, VERY long list of friends, colleagues,
neighbours, etc. that played in the movie. Damn, he even
'recycled' the main character of PI...

I'm not exaggerating.. I actually had to put my head between
my legs or I'd gone down.. I was all white and shaking when
I left the theatre..

did I mention I went to see it on my own without ANY notion
what it was about?

just went because of Aronofsky and Pi..

Hehehe, me too. I was expecting something wacky and a little
disturbing, not the worst emotional bludgeoning since I
broke up with my first longterm girlfriend.

Another movie that I found as deeply afffecting but not
nearly as depressing was Crumb by that Zwigoff guy, the one
who later did the so-so Ghost World. It was also one of
those "stagger blindly from the cinema" movies but the
emotions were more like 50% inspiration, 25% depression and
25% compassion.

mousey.......

you have to SEE the DVD......the chapter selections, etc are
like adverts from infomercials.....it's priceless.

and yes they have the commentary with aronofsky......that
might be interesting......but i have not watched it with
that yet. =0)

Yeah qrter movies are to be entertained.... and expose
yourself to new views on things... to take you to another
place...

but I just didnt dig this one. I thought PI was great and
think he is a great director... but this one left me with a
bad taste in my mouth... I saw it twice and the second time
I liked it even less...

its wierd cause some friends of mine think it is the best
movie ever made, and say great things about it
