You know sometimes I think the people on this board are
ignorant beyond belief. This whole "pop is crap" mentality
is getting out out of control. People whine and whine about
"pop music" being stagnant etc... are you aware that there
is a huge amount of brilliant pop music out there? Go buy
Wilco's new album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Saying pop is
bullshit is like someone hearing a Paul Oakenfold remix and
saying "elecronic" music is crap.
If all you whol hate pop are only referring to MTV crap, get
the hell over it. Theyre trying to make money at the expense
of creativity? NO SHIT! What a brilliant thought! Can you
imagine that no one has ever thought of this before? What a
breakthrough you all have made! Did it ever occur to you
that most people dont give a rats ass about music at all?
That the average 14 year olds life is really shit and they
want a fantasy to get lost in? How many of you care about
live theatre? Should the people involved with the broadway
production of "the lion king" be ashamed they sold out when
they should have been starving each night while performing
"Waiting for Godot?" Some people on this MB need to get off
their high horses and take a look around. Everyone has a
different perspective.

I just don't like being politically correct and nice and
accepting of lower forms of life. I recommend MASS SLAUGHTER
of all 14 year old girls and Limp Bizkit fans. Ground up
into hamburger meat (see above post, somewhere up there), to
feed the hungry. THEN they'd be doing society a service.

SATAAAAAANNNN!!!!!

You're right, everyone does have a different perspective,

wouldn't go as far to say that all pop is crap, but I think
that most of it is.

thats the stupidest generalization ive come across in ages.
You know, people could be posting on a boy band website
right now about how IDM geeks are stuckup pretentious twats,
and you know what? They would be right! And who cares? NO
ONE! So let people listen to whatever they want in peace. I
realise no one is losing sleep over this, but cant you find
something better to do than put down "the pop side"? for
chistsakes, has every single survey topic been exausted
already? For a group of seemingly "intelligent" people, most
of you sure dont have anything interesting to talk about.

I'm not anti pop music...i passed that stage when i was
about fifteen years old, and started listening to Beach Boys
and Beatles instead of NoFX, Bad Religion etc...

I like to think i have a pretty eclectic taste in music. I
love alot of music, i have one criterium...it has to be
sincere...IDM, Pop, Jazz, Punk are just labels, i don't
care. This Avril girl is just so fabricated...ughh

Um... music is music, mates... just vibrating particles...
some vibrations are more appealing to the senses than
others... and everyones' senses are as different as they
are the same.

Despite the hardline conservative views of some of you, or
the highly pop-suspicious liberals of the rest, all this
shit is is noise...

Personally, I agree that "artists" such as Shakira and this
fake-punk Avril Lavinge are highly pre-fabricated, often
untalented, and from my stance do not offer interesting or
original vibrations, but in the end, who's laughing all the
way to the bank? These "artists" have manipulated music
industry to their own ends, releasing a typical,
verse-chorus-verse song no longer than three minutes long
(with an image-building video to boot) which will line their
pockets and make them "stars." These people aren't
visionaries like John Cage/Erik Satie, nor are they
evolutionaries like Richard James or Mike Paradinas. They
aren't conflicted brilliants like Radiohead or Wilco. They
aren't trying to redefine the sound of sound. They haven't
the capacity of genius to do so. They will capitalize on
popularity and ride a wave of luck and the safety net of pop
music's never-changing formulas to their early retirement,
though... this is what the majority of the music we aren't
listening to is doing, folks. We aren't pretentious "IDM"
fans. We are fans of new ideas and directions, and that
progress is being made by certain, very special artists, a
few of which we are already very familiar with. Other
mainstream influences include Mike Patton, System of a Down,
Tool, Moby, Craig David, Madonna (by way of producers), and
so on...

You are all right and all wrong and it doesn't matter
anyway...

Credentials:

I've managed a record store for a year, by the way, so I
obviously know jack-shit about what I've said here...

I agree with Taoist... generalizing pop music as crap, is
like calling all 80's music crap... You can't generalize a
whole decade as crap, just as you can't generalize a whole
genre, and pop isn't even a genre really... I have always
said I loved good pop music, and there is plenty of it out
there... I don't really think I'm more intelligent, or more
hardcore for like IDM, cause I'm not... it's just a
different taste in music... Because I like Autechre, or
Aphex Twin doesn't make me more intelligent, it just means I
have different tastes in music... and really, pop music is
what's popular by the majority, so how can it be crap if
more people like it? If music makes people happy, isn't that
enough? Be it boy bands pop, brit pop, pop punk, whatever...
IDM is just one facet of my music tastes, and so is good pop
music... I like all types of music...

man, I TOTALLY disagree... all pop music is is popular
music... Radiohead are in a sense pop... Kid A debuted at
number 1, and, I do believe High and Dry was a top 40 hit,
although I could be wrong... you can't just go and label all
popular music as trash man, cause there is some good pop
music out there...

and pop is not all prefabricated music, and people and bands
man... some bands actually get together and write good pop
music... Coldplay, I love them, and they make good pop
music... they're not prefabricated... U2, they make good pop
music (although their last album was crap), and they're
definitely not prefabricated... all pop is, is popular...
and not all popular music is crap... it's not a genre... if
IDM ever became pop would you start calling that crap just

i shouldn't care so much its just that im concerned. i feel
bad when people are subjected to this day in and day out.
they don't know any better...they don't know what else is

Amon you make these sweeping generalizations that do nothing
more than expose your obvious lack of knowledge about music.
Pop is not just what is played on the radio, and all the
lyrics arent about sex. You say pop is mostly crap? You know
what? Most IDM is crap. Most rap is crap. Most of the people
making music on this board are crap. Most music OUT THERE is
crap. I agree the radio isnt the best place to find
interesting new music; but you come across as simply
slagging what you obvioulsy know nothing about, which, my
friend, is a very dangerous stance to take.

most of the bad IDM is better than the bad pop. id rather
listen to bad IDM than bad pop anyday. my standpoint in
general is pop as in all those boy bands and stuff. i would
never call radiohead pop and i wouldn't call U2 pop. its
just how i consider things...so don't be so angry. and
yes...on the radio, most of the lyrics (where i am anyway)
ARE bout sex.

heres the thing. i think pop has a good / bad reputation as
word depending on where you are. im talking about 'pop' not
'popular'. yes those aforementioned groups are popular with
people but no really AS popular as some POP bands...which
are more popular really. ive seen how the word 'pop' is
handled on tv and i have a hard time calling good 'popular'
music 'pop'.

so i call radiohead and U2 rock...

I wouldn't called Daft punk's Homework cd 'pop' but 'house
or hardhouse'

I WOULD however call their new cd 'pop' cause it uses so
much of what 'pop' is. its happy, giddy, bubblegum with
that atrocious vocoder voice thing which is oft used.

Where YOU are? Dude I live 20 minutes away from you. Your
definition of pop is the boy bands and Nickelback? So
basically you are saying there are only about 50 pop bands
because thats probably about how many different songs they
play on the radio? Uh huh ok buddy.

"id rather
listen to bad IDM than bad pop anyday"

That would seem to be your preference, yes; and your dad
could beat up my dad Ill warrant.

Can you tell me what songs have lyrics about sex? Maybe some
facts to back up your perposterous claims?

"I BET THE PEOPLE THAT
PLAYED THAT SONG DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT LOATHE MEANS! I BET
THE RAPPER THAT RAPPED THAT SONG DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT
LOATHE MEANS! "

You insult the vocabulary of millions of people and you dont
think you are being an elitist twat? You put down hundreds
of bands (not to mention their fans) as being trash (and
idiots) without ever having heard their music simply because
you dont like the backstreet boys.

The 50 pop bands statement was derived form you saying you
only consider pop music to be what is played on the radio.
The radio only ever has circulation of about 50 songs which
they play over and over so basically there are around 50 pop
groups by your definition; which makes a lot of sense.
