actually you don't need silent gaps for rhythm. ex. have tone 1 and tone 2 alternate in a pattern with no gaps at all.

wmw : you still have gaps with respect to tone1 and tone2 tho .. but yeah .. ain't exactly "silent" .. although it is in a way, because you don't hear the tone .. ON/OFF

you just need something "different" in contrast to something "the same" to make a pattern. but really a big white sheet of paper isn't "the same" every molecule is a seperate molecule, they just happen to have evolved to look and behave the same. I guess.
