THIS
"I think that because many people believe in god he exists in a way."
is also one of the most interesting thoughts i've read in a long time! You're absolutely right... religion is making millions of people all over the world lead happy lives, helping them and comforting them etc.... that can't be called "nothing" indeed. And i agree with laserbeak there... in a way the faith of all those people has made god real.

I hate "something-ism", where people say they don't believe in a biblical god, but "well, there must be something" and then start pointing at mountains and sunsets and insects saying: "just look around you, that can't be coincidence, can it?".
why not? thats the whole point of coincidence - its just that, however small the chances are.
I think its human reasoning to think there must always be a higher system that creates something less complicated..
"something-ism" seems to me like a cop-out - "I can't stand the idea that there isn't some reason for existance, but I don't really believe in anything, so I'll go with something vague.."..

i can see your point and understand why you feel that way... but still i've found no better way to put it :-p
I don't believe in the bible, but i also don't believe it was all just a coincidence! I find both these options to amazing and unbelievable to be true... so it must be something inbetween. Just haven't figured out what yet. Maybe in 20 years time my anwser will be be somewhat less vague.
It also probably has something to do with the fact that i HOPE there is some sort of a higher being. When i think about the coincidence-theory... everything just is, and has no meaning whatsoever... that's a really scary thought to me :-s
There's even a name for this phenomena :-p Lots of people don't believe in God anymore... But in the place of their lives where god used to be, there is now a god-shaped hole... or so they say. And many people are looking for something to fill that hole.

they did? That's crazy! :-p But how can they be sure whose brother a couple of bones used to be? You'd think they'd need a bone of jesus himself to compare the dna and whatnot?

it was just on the news. the bone box had an inscription saying something like 'this is whassisname, brother of jesus.' apparently, normally those bone boxes only have an inscription mentioning the name of the deceased and his father.....
presumably jesus had already performed enough miracles to be important enough to be mentioned on his brother's bone box :O

Hiller, do you know anything about the artwork or the artist of your avatar? It seems a little contradictory to your view point. Not that you can't enjoy art without understanding or agreeing with it; it just caught my attention.

beliving in got is like beliving in trolls, elves, big foot, alien ufos etc.. IMO.
okey, perehaps somene gets a kick when he belive god is watching his back or feels good when he know he will be reborn as a toad or whatever but in the bigger picture religon brings suffering and breeds ignorance. IMO

yeah yeah, i just watched the news... and at the end of it they announced they would have an item on those bones in the late news, later this evening :-) I'll try to remember to watch it!
It's probably a fake though... relics usually turn out to be fakes. Throughout history there have been so many splinters of wood from jesus' cross, you could have built at least 20 crosses from them :-p
Still it's an interesting discovery...
