hehe, ok here we go

sakura is definitely his best (best album ever for me),
then;
if you prefer electronic sounds you could go with grinning
cat
and if you prefer organic sounds try out the boy and the
tree
but you cant go wrong with any of these:
-sakura
-grinning cat
-the boy and the tree
-image 1983-1998
-magic thread

enjoy :)

here are some comments on sakura, when it was released

pick of the month
one of the albums of the year
the most well-chilled album of the year
pretty much flawless
powerfully emotional...bears comparison with eno's finest
70s recordings

Hey tolstoyed, are these...

All his releases that you've got? Because i'm looking at the
site of Rare Records (dutch music-store) and it says
something about a "Mix Ep"? But maybe you already have that
one too :-)

"four tracks of deep, organic, moving house music, with more
musical nous than most house producers even know exists"
"simply stunning.you cant really go wrong with this one"
"where deep house often spirals into a black hole of its own
making, this succeeds by being implicitly warm to the touch"

Here's what rare records says about it:

Susume yokota's reputation in europe is growing fast, with
media acclaim for his two downtempo leaf releases to date
('image 1983-1998' and 'magic thread') and his most recent
albums for japanese house/techno label sublime ('1998' and
'1999'). The 'mix' ep succesfully brings together boths
strands of his work, with satisfyingly warm deep house mixes
of his own acoustic, more ambient tracks.

taken from an album of remixes of tracks originally released
on his own skintone label in japan in 1999 (also entitled
'mix'), these tracks sound like a return to the roots of
house music, leaving the idiosyncratic glitches and mistakes
in place to give a more human feel.

the originals of three of these tracks ('nisemono no uta',
'morino gadudan' and 'enogu') appeared on yokota's first
leaf release, 'image 1983-1998', while the forth,
'naminote', is taken from his third skintone/leaf album
'sakura'.

Tracklisting:

A1. naminote/rhythm mix
A2. morino Gakudan/remix
B1. enogu/remix
B2. Nisemono No Uta/Remix

Sakura, Grinning Cat, Image 1983-1998, Magic Thread and 1998
are all good.

Only listened to The Boy And The Tree once and didn't really
like it. Will give it another go soon though as I'm often
way out on a first listen.

You were right :-) Sakura wasn't hard to find. I
bought the cd today!

In it was a little leaflet (pun not intended) for leaf
records...

It says about the Mix Ep:

9 track (!?!?) Japanese import CD available by mail order
only.

"Simply stunning, you can't go wrong with this one!"
blues & soul

"Four tracks (!?!? eh... i is confused about the number of
tracks now) of deep, organic, moving house music, with more
musical nous than most house producers even know exists"
8/10 Wax

"Where deep house often spirals into a black hole of its own
making, this succeeds by being implicitly warm to the touch"
NME

"Hopefully this EP will introduce DJs and clubbers alike to
Yokota's soulful innovations" 4/5 DJ

Maybe you can order it directly from leaf records??

According to the leaflet: leaf@posteverything.com

http://www.posteverying.com/leaf

The Leaf Label
Suite 219
Bon Marché Building
241 Ferndale Road
London SW9 8BJ, UK

Hope that helps :-) But maybe you already found it on the
japanese sites.

I haven't listened to Sakura yet... will post about it when
i have.

perhaps it would be best if i try and contact leaf by email
about this mix ep, because it says on their site that it was
deleted!?
i hope you're going to like sakura, hehe

hm... so i see. I hadn't looked at the site myself yet when
i posted that.

Well good luck! Deleted sounds rather definitive... but who
knows. Maybe they still have some spare copies lying around
the office ;-)

Sakura is already lying next to me on the desk... i'm going
to listen to it next, when the currently playing cd is
finished :-) i'm sure it'll be good though. I had already
heard all those amazon-samples.

hehe... he seems to have kept all the best tracks for last?

I have to leave the computer in 5 minutes, so i'll write
quickly what i think about the album so far.

The first tracks were all beautiful ambient music... nothing
really special yet (i think they will probably grow
on me as i listen to the album more).

But then came kodomotachi, which almost gave me
orgasm listening to it :-o What an incredibly beautiful
track!!

The next one sounded very jazzy :-) like my "Kind of Blue"
cd... very nice! And now i'm at #11... and it is amazing
also...

I really have to go now, will write more later... but that
track #9 alone was well worth the asking price of the entire
cd :-D

hehe, glad you like kodomotachi

my favourite tune ever :)

rest of it will grow on you, not all most likely-some stuff
is really not that great, but i picked sakura to be my
favourite album mostly because of KODOMOTACHI
haha
his latest album the boy and the tree has much more
wonderful tracks, there is hardly a track that i dont like,
but none of those are nearly as good as kodomotachi

"hehe, glad you like kodomotachi
my favourite tune ever :)
"

really? :-p
I knew you said it was one of the tracks on this album, but
i forgot which one. Such a coincidence that i pick out the
exact same one :-) (well... not coincidence, it's just an
amazing song).

"rest of it will grow on you, not all most likely-some
stuff is really not that great,
"

lol, and NOW you tell me?! ;-)
There is a sticker on the front of my cd, with a couple of
quotes from reviews... and one of them is: "pretty much
flawless" :-p I still have pretty high hopes all the tracks
will grow on me. After all it is ambient music... not
everything is supposed to be amazing and grab your
attention... i think alot of tunes on ambient-albums are
just there for the atmosphere of the entire album... and in
that sense they can work really well, even though on their
own these tracks might not be so special...

(hope that made sense).

right now i'm listening to confield... after it is over i
will probably go to bed, and listen to Susumu while i fall
asleep :-)

i remember when i got that album right after it was
released-i just brought it home, gave it a rapid listen and
put it aside. After a while i started to really listen to it
so i can say it took quite some time for it to grow on me.
then when i got his next album grinning cat i was just
shocked of what thiis guy is capable of-it will sound weird
but actually grinning cat made me appreciate sakura even
more :)
my favourite tracks from sakura are 1,2,3,5,6 and 9, but its
a beautiful album all together
