therapy: wtf will gf think of me?

I'm going to start therapy in a week.

Intensive Cognative Behavioral Therapy

Basically will help me deal with worrying, anxious behavior,
and focusing on tasks.
------------------
The Problem

I'm scared to tell my gf, though I hinted at it, becuase I
think it will make her think I'm fucking ridiculous and
crazy.

this is part of the therapy, to get over the above way of
thinking, but until I get over it, wtf do I do?

I guess I can hide it till I get a bit better, I won't see
her for a few more weeks.

Yeah, hide it, get better, learn how to not flip out, then
tell her I am better?

I'm so scared, but this therapy should help, but mother
fucker, anyone else done this therapy? help?..........

Wait a sec...

I would think your gf would be supportive - you're trying to
improve yourself - it's a noble cause. Why not just tell
her the truth?

Sorry to sound like Dr. Phil but that's what I think.

hey man therres nothing to be embarraced about. embrrace it
and it might rreally help you and i'm surre she will like
the confident blatant rratherr than the anxious worrrrierr.

she will help you, she won't push you away.

dunno.

my parents brought me to a psychiatrist when i was 13
because i was asocial / paranoid / far too shy. i think it
helped me (i'm not sure but maybe).

Therapy is a good thing. No need to be ashamed of it. Its
people who dont seek help to aid their problems who have
issues...

Therapy made me all the more better.

In the end what it comes down to is finding peace with
yourself.

>>> do NOT takethis the wrrong way >>>

no matterr how crronic, herre in the UK we don't go to see
the doctorr untill the cancerr has turrned us black.

its not just shyness..... that only a small simptom of what
depression is..

I think that is such bullshit trying to claim that people in
the U.K are harder then people in America.. just my 2 cents
anyway

People have emotional problems everywhere you go, its a
world problem, and as the years pass its becoming worse and
worse.

Make sure they never see the "how to get a girl..." thread
or they will just flip up your skull-cap and use a Braun
hand blender. :-)

Try to swing it to the chick as "sensitive but courageous
guy goes bravely exploring the depths of his psyche", not as
"they hit me with a ruler whenever I bite my nails".

what bullshit.

therapy can help people. lots of people can't find "the
answers" because lots of them don't even really know what
the questions are. and thats where therapy can help.

CBT is a real good therapy technique...best of luck, mate;
hope it helps you out...I'm sure it will, I hear nothing but
good about it...

Perhaps talk to the people there about how to mention this
to your gf, no need to tell her before you are ready
really...

and people, don't confuse CBT with lying on couch type
Therapy...totally different things...CBT is all about
learning new thinking & coping techniques....I've a theory
most people could benefit from it...

offline Mickey Mouse from The Moon on 2002-12-20 20:19 [#00487176]

or else youll look like bryce's avatar.

I have never taken any medication, just simple therapy and
working out my problems, with therapy its not like someone
can take controll of you and do everything for you glass
eater, which a lot of people think therapy is, YOU alone
have to work out your problems, so you are finding the
answers out by yourself, but with a little guidance. People
cant read eachothers minds, or control other people, not yet
anyway, so its all up to you how you benefit from therapy.
And will power has a lot to do with it

BTW I had CBT therapy and it was the best thing that I have
ever decided to do for myself.

yeah, like jand said, wait till you're ready... but you
shouldn't be embarressed... I mean, if she thought you were
a loser for going to therapy, would you really want to be
with her? I don't think you have any reason to be
embarressed, and if she just all of a sudden changed her
opinion about you because she heard you were going to
therapy, well, she ain't a very good person in my books...
but, if she's supportive, you know you got a keeper! :)

you put the biggest smile on my face with regards to what
you said about CBT

I am going to do this to aquire the tools to control my
anxious behavior and focus myself on the tasks at hand.
-----------------------

I think I'm going to tell gf when I am deep into it or
almost done, not before, kinda don't wanna jinx myself or
this relationship.

should start therapy next week, I'll let you know if it
helps the way I need it to.

you have almost convinced me to go on CBT therapy.

you should be happy you get therape, and your gf should be
happy about it as well. i know i need it but the
possibilities for decent therapy up here are not so big -
depression and mental illness are big problems in finland so
the lines can be like 2 years. private clinics are full
booked too. this is the worst; it makes me feel like there
is no-one to help.

talk to your gf, she will understand if she is worth it.
such a cliche but cliches are often true :)

i hear you, maybe you should make a trip somewhere to get
intensive therapy?

It should only take 1-2 months, maybe part of school if you
are still in school?
-------------------------

I'm not going to tell her till I have started and know it's
helping, or till after if she is to ask.

I don't even know if I will bring it up, but I can't wait to
start.

it's not like you're having yourself committed, man. it's
just therapy. just explain to her that you have alot of
little problems in general, and that in order to be the best
boyfriend you can, you need to go to therapy.

i wish I could just get this over with.

I think I'm going to go back to school early and fucking
start this therapy shit as soon as I can.

I want to be past this part of my life.

especially past the need to complain every 14 seconds. damn
