i love this guy's words.....just amazing and inspiring!

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being the more joy
you can contain.

Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was
burned in the potter's
oven?

-Kahlil Gibran, mystic, poet, and artist (1883-1931)

The deeper that sorrow carves into your being the more
joy you can contain.

Why sure! Ask any victim of war crimes who has watched loved
ones getting gangraped and bayoneted. They'll tell you it's
the greatest joy of all.

Rwandans who have had limbs macheted off their living
torsos? They're simply aglow with delight.

And you know what they call the children's cancer ward in
any major hospital? That's right: The Happiest Place on
Earth.

Hehehe, I remember one a friend told me..

"Gravity should not be held responsible for people who fall
in love"

fleetmouse, it's not a law of existence; it doesn't have to
apply to those situations. i know some who have grown up in
relative poverty that live a more joyous life than many of
the sad snobs from west bloomington (nearby wealthy area)
that i've known. it's an ancient archtypal process... the
ecstasy and the agony. it's an archetype found in poetry
and mythology of all cultures. journey of the wounded
healer, decend to the underworld so that one may rise to
heaven. experiencing a negative extreme opens up potential
for the postive extreme, but it's not a "rule," just a
potential.

What does relative poverty mean? Does it mean their cars are
not as nice? That must really carve that sorrow into their
being.

"Camus wrote like a man who had just finished a large dinner
of steak and french fries, salad, and had topped it with a
bottle of good French wine. Humanity may have been suffering
but not him. A wise man, perhaps, but Henry preferred
someone who screamed when they burned."

Charles Bukowski, Hot Water Music

fleet...it's really saying joy & sorrow are relative...you
get thru shit in life & when some joy finally appears it's
all the more welcome & savoured...

that's just one way of thinking about it...

cheers Lec BTW...never heard of that guy before...*jand
hangs head in cultural shame..;)...

I know this feeling well.

i like your quote LeCoeur...

i think it's like an elastic, the deeper you pull it on the
side of sorrow the deeper it will come into happiness when
you release it?
(but of course if you pull it too far into sorrow...
it breaks and it's over.)

fleet.....i think you took the quote outta context. it was
meant to be a positive thing......it's a few simple words,
it has nothing to do with the examples you brought out.
those kind of tragedies are on a whole other level.

jup.....you explained it beautifully. thanks

jand....glad you liked the quote. Gibran is an amazing
writer you should check him out, i'm sure there's something
on line or in your local library. you'll enjoy his work. i
have LOTS more quotes of his coming up. =0)

uzim...glad you enjoyed it as well...and sadly yes i'd have
to agree with your assessment of it breaking and ending.
hopefully that person or their friends or family will see
the warning signs and get them help. there is hope outthere,
you just have to be willing to look for it.

fleet, do you honestly not know what the term means, or are
just being an ass? i'm talking about homeless people who
certainly don't own an automobile and who don't get to eat
three meals a day, as opposed to absolute poverty where
people will likely starve to death. i don't know that there
is absolute poverty in america.
