Emotional music vs technical music

which kind of music do you prefer?

and what do i mean by each?

emotional, ie boards of canada

technical, ie autechre, richard devine

note: of course pretty much any artists arent exclusively
one or the other. most of them have a touch of both (like
ae, but for me, theyre more technical than emotional).

most definitely emotional..no question

pure emotion beats out technical emotion anyday. a "nifty
comination of both" os fine tho :D

ways, and a good balance of the two is always something
special

no, that's not just you. i also find some of lipswitch to
be quite emotional. all music is emotional to me, but some
is more intensely emotional than other.

i find autechre to be very very emotional.

in fact, I wouldnt call any of the music i listen to plain
technical... even though its electronic... its always
emotional.

the worst kind of non emotional, technical music, is
shredding on guitars, or jazz people who dont know when to
stop

offline CORTEX from Canada on 2002-12-14 17:20 [#00481056]

autechre are mostly technical, but there's still a shitload
of emotions in their music. takes a lot of listens before
you can see it.

lipswitch's 'emotional side' is less obvious though.

Is emotion a more primitive form of consciousness, that in
humans developed into full-fledged self-awareness? emotions
are a product of evolution, they exist because they favor
our species in natural selection. What emotions seem to do
is help us make fast decisions in crucial situations.
Besides, emotions are also the fastest way that we can
communicate with members of our group. The American
psychiatrist Allan Hobson thinks that emotions are signals
between animals of the same species that communicate one's
brain state to another.

I personally don't find Autchre emmotional, but rather,
atmospheric. When I listen to Amber or Confield, I imagine
landscapes and images, rather than feeling any emmotion.

definitely emotional...

completely techinical music can be nice.. but it gets boring
faster... im not very well versed in music theory or
computer programming/software/hardware technology... so i
dont really pay attention to the structures and mechanics
and techniques behind the making of music
being an artsy fartsy space cadet art student.. i tend to
appreciate the moods and atmospherics of music

which is probably why i've only listened to lipswitch like
twice and was bored to tears both times (i'll give it
another try later tonight i think..so dont jump all over
me..)

and go plastic is probably my least favorite sp album

technical music is nice while youre listening to it.. but it
usually doesnt leave me with anything.. and usually doesnt
compell me to go back and listen to it a lot

all music is emotional. you always feel something when
listening to music - you can't be just blank..

autechre can be emotional at times.. (vletrmx21 obviously,
rae, most of cichli suite, bits of tri repetae and amber,
most of incuabula, etc)

but as cs2x said..theyre more about atmosphere and
texture... which i suppose can be as good as emotion
...confield has a very thick atmosphere..and is obviously
very textural.. so its not so cold and clinical

i suppose go plastic is pretty atmospheric at times too...
but not so much as MIRON...or at least in a different way

i disagree with most of what you said, but it's a pretty
interesting point of view i must admit.

"What emotions seem to do
is help us make fast decisions in crucial situations."

- the rational you should get the upper hand in
crucial decisions rather than the emotional you, imo.

i agree, but in the end, as in everything, it's all
subjective.

in my mind, ae are:

45% emotion
55% technique

maybe because ive been an addict for quite a while and
associate their music to many situations.

''i find autechre to be very very emotional''

here here! listen to tri rep, you guys can't hear emotion
bleeding out of every minute of that? it's a weird
combination of emotion thru machine

technique has nothing to do with emotion.

it can be very technical and still be extremely emotional.
it almost sounds as if you think the one pushes out the
other.

I second that...I know of very few people that actually make
music..as a perfuntionary intellectual excercise..there's is
a moment an urge an idea aneed that makes you create..that
could actually be called an emotion in it self..

hell even Happy Hardcore emotes...

however am I right in assuming that what you are calling
emotion here is actually those languid melancholic
strains..?

well flea, what I meant is more along the lines that the
person who listens will always project some sort of emotion
on the music heard.

in how far the music is 'technical' should not really
matter, me thinks. 'technical' and 'emotional' are 2
different levels to listen to in music, they don't combine.

offline Zozu from London (United Kingdom) on 2002-12-14 19:55 [#00481197]

Music by its very nature creates a reaction in humans
whether good or bad...these are called emotions. So it
would be fair to say that all music is 'emotional'.

And what exactly are u refering to by 'technical'? Do you
mean music that sounds highly composed or purely computer
generated? 'Technical' is way too vaguer description for
music.

Looks like asking if we prefer 'emotional' or 'technical'
music doesn't make much sense, does it?!

then you got me all wrong. i think any track, ANY, has an
emotional component as well as a techinical component
(that's a given).

i just believe some track or albums or artists seems to have
more of a tacnhical OR emotional edge in their music, with
intention (of course i could be wrong).

this is why i asked the question: which of these two do you
prefer.

Technical - that wuld be steve Reich and or any Dance music
artists that are worth their salt.
Emotional - that would be much, much harder to answer I'm
just going to say blues music.

Can I add to this by saying air seem to be fascinated by
this distinction. There's definately something lurking in
this recentist release ???

I mean, you started to use percentages to give a rough
indication of how much of a track is emotional and how much
is technical - if you see it like that, tracks that are high
in technicality in your opinion, always 'push out' the
emotional part (seeing as there is a max. of 100%).

I'm saying both do apply to music, but on different levels.
you can listen to music for its technicality ("mm.. tricky
dicky devine does some intricate stuff here..") OR for its
emotion ("mm.. I love step focus..makes me happy").. not
both at the SAME TIME.
