Does anyone here have the standard version of the font
Helvetica for PC? I was wondering if someone could send it
to me through AIM...

yay!...we got some font nerds here :)...

You're probably sorted by now, but just for info, Arial (the
standard windows one) is more or less identical to helvetica
if you ever get really stuck...

(hehe...I'm such a font snob I've deleted Comic Sans off my
machine....why the fuck everyone at work likes sending
emails using that font I'll never know...I don't think
people realise exactly the effect a font can have on the
character of a document; basically I can't treat things
written in Comic Sans seriously...)...

Helvetica Bold is kind of killing it at the moment... get in
there quick before it's officially pronounced "rinsed"

what is that helvetica thing about?
a simple font?
why helvetica???
:)

It's so perfect and functional. Its used by transport
companies etc... its kind of the ultimate minimal no frills
font. But it's so nicely proportioned as well...

I AM A NERD and a font trainspotter

it's pretty much already "rinsed" to my mind...but that
whole Swiss style design look is so timeless & stylish if
done right, it overcomes it's overuse really...

glass...it's a sans serif font as well..(i.e. it hasn't got
all those curves & widgits at the edge of letters like Times
New Roman and the like...)...that makes em a lot easier on
the eye when reading on-screen...

Personally I hate most serif fonts ...too ornamental &
flowery...Helvetica combines beauty and functionality better
than most fonts - another reason it's a designer fave....

i don't like helvetica... but i like arial.
it only changes a little, but when it's enough for me to
like or to dislike it.
my favorite font of this kind remains akzidenz grotesk (and
what a name!)... :)
more stylish ones, like 'metaplus', are good too...
and some of the borderline category between sans serif and
decorative, like basenine/basetwelve... and DIN
Mittelschrift, and some other fonts used in similar places
(100% functional), i've seen and would love to have but
don't even know the name...

about 'comic sans'... i used to like it a little but i hate
it printed. when used as a system font, then it looks really
nice (just like 'skia') - but on printed documents it's
not.

'treefrog', 'enya', or the 'childsplay' series, - now that's
good handwriting fonts! (or 'salade de fruits', but that's
now self-advertising ;))

akzidenz grotesk
FF meta (metaplus)
Din MittelSchrift (one of the DIN series, used on german
signalisations...)
FF child's play

downloadable:
treefrog
enya (maybe not that amazing but whatever, i like
it... :))

Helvetica is the GREATEST. Arial's t and R are really crap
compared with Helvetica's. Actually, I quite like Arial's
R.. But the Helvetica is better. Helvetica is THE perfect
font.

it may not have real imperfections, but it's quite an
insipid font to me.

Her's my favs
Serifs:
Adobe Garamond and its italic and oldstyle figures
Janson and its italic
Sabon and its italic
Baskerville and its very useful italic (good for "period"
work)

Classic Sans Serifs:
Frutiger
Univers
Franklin
Aksidenz
Futura (especially nice as all-caps)

Trendy but Useful Sans Serifs:
Meta
Rotis
Scala Sans (has a quirky but nice italic)
Trebuchet

Fonts I Hate and Never Want to See Used (a very personal,
biased list):
Helvetica
Sand
Avant Garde
Any typeface with "Swash" in its name
Palatino
Optima
Times

oh yeah, another akzidenz "fan"! ^^

i agree about sand, it's awful... and times too...
i have nothing really against optima nor palatino though.

my fav serif font is mrs eaves, it's kind of...
baskerville 'remixed' by zuzana licko :)

mrs eaves is nice looking I'll have to try using it in
something, thanks!

I love finding new fonts, it opens up your mind to new
ideas.

I'm a graphic artist so typography is a very important part
of me.

Really? How does one go about doing that?... what programs
do you use once you have a rough idea?

offline uzim on 2002-11-21 15:11 [#00450841]

photoshop and fontographer...

it's easy to make some kinds of decorative fonts, but i
haven't ever managed to do a "classic" serif or sans serif
one...
i would need a much better resolution for that, more
patience and above all MUCH better drawing skills! ;)

beautiful. I hate serif fonts, like times. Overused!
