Sometimes i wonder if music is too important to me?
Yesterday i started writing on a letter to a teacher of mine (well ex-teacher, since i graduated, but we kept in touch). I also put her last letter on the desk, so that i might reply to what she wrote...
And the first thing she asked in her letter was: "how are you erik? I'm so curious to hear what you've been up to."
And the first things that instantly came to mind were like: "well i recently bought Board of Canada's 2nd album, and it's just so beautiful! It's changed my life."
or: "well i finally got around to buying weezer's first album, it really is as great as everyone said it was! It puts a smile on my face whenever i hear it."
or: "I'm amazed to say i actually like the new pearl jam-album, it's so great to have my old heroes back, i can't stop listening to it!"
etc... etc... it just feels like music is the most important thing in my life at this moment... and buying (and listening) to a new album is to me a much more important event than what goes on at work and at home, hehe ;-)
I'm not sure if this is healthy... or even normal. But frankly i don't really care, because the music gives me so much beautiful moments!
But yeah... i do realise i can't put stuff like that in the letter ;-) I'll have to tell her about the less important things that have been happening, lol.

Music is the most important thing in my life, by far. Ten times more important than any girl, and I proved that a year ago when I basically chose it over a relationship. I'm just way to passionate about it and it clouds my judgement and affects my decisions. Hell, I'd be getting straight As if it wasn't for music, it just takes up so much of my time/effort.

How did that happen? I'm just curious... if you don't wanna share such personal information it's not a problem :-)
But i'm curious what situation it could have been that forced a man to choose between a relationship and listening to music? I don't see why you couldn't have both at the same time?

Put A and B together, and LOOK OUT, not meant to be. I tend to spend most of my time alone, and most of THAT time listening to music, no time for a relationship... not yet, anyway. I'm just way too antisocial.

yeah, music is pretty important to me... one of the most important, but maybe not the SOLE most important... definitely in my top five!! :)
Good music can be like a religious (spiritual I guess is a better word) experience to me... I bought the new Sigur Ros album on friday, and it's amazing... it's like a purging of my soul every time I listen to it... I think that we here (people who are serious about music) see it as more then just a catchy tune, or a good beat to dance to... we as education about life, about the MEANING of life even... we see it as a way to learn about ourselves, and the world and people around us...
it is much much more then a catchy beat and tune... MUCH much more!!

really? That's kind of cool :-D I never knew it was also a brazillian name!
Most of the people i meet with the same name spell it with a -c at the end. My mother tells me this spelling (erik) is the scandinavian way of writing it! (though she never really explained why she chose it... since she's never been to any scandinavian countries).
Well nice to meet you! (even though we've already written in the same thread together ;-)). Nice to see another erik out there :-p

hm... i see your point :-/
I would like to have a relationship, but i've never actually thought about how it would have to work. I'm kind of loner too... it would just be difficult for me to have a proper conversation with any girl. Let alone go out and do fun stuff together.
Life is strange. But "not meant to be"... that sounds like you've given up hope altogether... i'm not at that stage yet ;-)

I'm pathologically shy, I should really do something about it. But I like my own company anyway, it's not like I'm upset that I'm always alone... I go out of my way to avoid people (went out of my way to avoid my GF at times, THAT'S bad).
It's much easier online to talk to people. In real life, I only have a couple dozen posts. ;-)

In real life, I only have a couple dozen posts. ;-)
LOL, that made me laugh real hard :-p Yeah i know what you mean... i hardly ever say anything to anyone in real life. I see other people live their lives and having fun, and it all seems so easy... and yet impossible for me to reach.
Anyone ever see a movie called "extension du domaine de la lutte"? Whilst watching it, i felt it was like looking at myself in the future. It was about a man who only had one relationship and had given up hope of ever finding happiness again. And his friend who was 28 years old and still a virgin. (and the movie actually becomes more depressing after that ;-)).
Ahwell... atleast i always have the music to keep me company :-) I find it to be alot better company than atleast 50% of the people out there, lol. Music has never let me down, not ever!

There are alot of shy people on this board...
I always like to say little things to strangers. Wish people that i meet in the streets a "good morning!", and have little conversations with people behind the counters in stores etc... it makes me feel like i have a social life ;-)
And actually, a few years ago i wouldn't have done even that, so i guess you could see it as some form of progress.
But when i get to know people better... i freeze up. I just cannot sit down with anyone and have a proper conversation. My mind just goes blank.

what you need is someone with similarr interrests.
Nah, i don't think so. If i met someone from this board in real life (that way i'd know we'd have similar interests), i still wouldn't know what to say. I'm convinced the problem lies within myself, not the people i'm surrounded by.

same here... music is everything to me.
when it came time to apply for college, i sat down with my parents and basically said "look, if i go to a normal college, ill fail, cause I just dont care about those kinds of classes, I just want to do music"
so my parents thought about it, and decided to send me to a music school, so at least im getting a degree of SOME sort.
And its the best thing that ever happened to me. School... but school that I love.
I work hard and do all my work, cause I love it.

You get sad when you think about what you're missing, when you don't, everything's OK
Well that is true... but it's kind of like an ostrich that sticks it's head in the ground and thinks it can't be seen anymore :-/
It's a sollution that seems to work, but doesn't really solve anything.
I'm convinced that if i would search help and talk to someone like a psychiatrist... he would probably diagnose that there is something "wrong" with me, and advice therapy...
But i'm too scared to do it :-s You just know that those social workers will want you to talk about the things i try desperately not to talk about, and make me do things i desperately don't want to do...
I've heard it so many times... the only way to overcome your fears is to confront them... but i'm just too scared to do it.
