why is minidisc a prefered recording format?
as far as i knew, the way minidiscs compress the audio onto a disc that small is because it uses similar compression to MP3 (or something that involves cutting out certain frequencies)
*confused....possibly stupid*

Mainly used by PROs now...never really caught on with the general public...
Sounds better as it's 48 samplingrate...a bit more than the 44.1.of CD....
(altho these new SACDs go as far as 96 at 24bit I believe, rather than 16....that does make a HUGE difference...)

Yep, that's what I'd heard. And DAT does 96,000khz now too right?

I've always assumed DAT was strictly a professional format. Similar to the DVCAM tapes we use for video recording here.
Minidiscs are very hard to come by in America for some reason. They never realy caught on as a widespread consumer format, unlike in Japan.

i live by minidisc, it is a shame more people don't use them. I always wanted a player in my car.

i think minidiscs have come into favor because they're more compatable with computers ..and have more space

recently bought a portable minidisc recorder. I was really surprised by the sound. Just that little more depth in bass and treble.
Sounds better than 44.1kHz recordings. Really happy with it

yeah, I reckon..
The big problem with them is they've got that bastard DRM (Digital Rights Management) thing built-in...& all the players I've seen so far don't have digital outs...so there's gonna be some definate loss of freedom there...
Besdie that big gotcha, it's a great format SACD on the quality front & there's already a load of releases (Aphex has done one even - The Gavin Bryers Sinking of the Titanic remix CD is a SACD....)...
oh yeah, it fully supports 5.1 as well....
I have a feeling the industry abhoars the CD as a format...too unprotected - SACD is where they'd really us like to go...the recent BMG annoucments about copy proting all their CD releases makes me suspect they want the CD to die as soon as pos...
(be warned....a lot of DVD players say they will play SACDs ; & yeah, they do play em but you won't hear anything from the digital out; it's silent...
