... linking park last night... I had a spotlight on them on
for a bit, and they said they listen to Aphex Twin... pretty
cool!

suggesting they were influenced by afx.

cool !? not to me.. think of how many hipster junior high
kids are gonna be like, 'cool, aphex twin.. let's check that
out.' I imagine Ae gained a load of new followers thanks to
Thom Yorke, and he's even semi-respected! I'm sorry, I'm
just paranoid and frustrated. I just wish if people in high
places liked this stuff that they'd keep it to themselves..
oh nevermind, i'm just upset over nothing

shrug... I didn't say I liked there music... but I don't
think they're as bad as everyone here makes them out to
be... it's not my style of music, but I think it's ok for
the genre...

Titsworth: well sorry, I don't remember that thread... I
just think it's cool whenever someone mentions him, or any
other music I really like, on television... didn't expect
everyone to get so, ummm, angry or something... :)

I do agree that it's pretty lame when a singer or something
drops a respected artists name, and you just know that they
hardly know who this person is, but just name dropped
him/her/them because they think it'll get them respect, blah
blah blah... but I think these guys really do listen to
aphex twin for some reason... and titsworth seems to know
that they do somehow... :)

so you people don't like linkin park eh? ;-)

I wonder if it is because of their music or their
popularity... to me it sounds like good popmusic in a
nu-metal diguise or something. It's not something i'd buy to
listen to in detail... but among all the crap on MTV these
days, i think they're -like the funkmaster said- ok for the
genre. Better than limp bizkit :-p

And that points of authority-remix sounded like a nin-song!
Horrible video though :-s All their videos are overproduced
and just... terrible.

right, it seems like a lot of people are afraid to admit
they like certain types of music because it's popular...
which is a stupid thing... and the only times people will
admit they like it is in those guilty pleasures threads...
who cares if it's popular? If you like music, you like it...
people who listen to pop music that is on the radio are
called "stupid" and said to have no taste in music, when
really, totally being against a genre of music and popular
music is just as stupid, or even more so... just because
someone listens to Aphex Twin, Autechre, or anything else
that isn't played on the radio doesn't mean they are any
more individual... half the people that listen to this could
be just doing so because they want to conform to this
smaller group (but no less of a group) that listens to this
music, because they think that then they will be viewed as
individualistic, and non-conforming... We think we're all
super intelligent, and individualistic because we listen to
what we think is our "own" music...

but isn't that weird? To hate a band's music just for that
reason?

You're saying that if you knew nothing about linkin park
(like you had been on a deserted island for the last 4 years
;-)), and someone let you hear some of their songs... you
might enjoy it. But now that you know something more about
this bands... 'status'? You don't like it anymore?

A good song is a good song in my mind. Sure i don't consider
linkin park's music a piece of art, but still... you could
do worse if you're a troubled teenager :-p

i guess what i'm trying to say is that i've been taken the

listen to

and now, when stuff that comes out that's not too dissimilar

it's just stupid that's all

See, like how do you know this? You're saying that because
you think the music is crap (which you're allowed to) and
thus there is no artistic value to it... and, you say they
have sold out just because they are popular... when really,
selling out has little to do with that... becoming popular
doesn't make you a sellout, it's whether you changed your
beliefs or whatever to do so... and really, how does anyone
here know that Linkin Park have done this? I don't like
them, but I don't agree with all this snobyness that comes
about when IDM heads talking about popular music and
stuff...

well, okay, i step down about the linkin park, because i
have no evidence that they are sell outs

but limp bizkit are!

in an interview on mtv2 uk once, fred dunce was going on
about the production of chocolate starfish, and he said that
they asked the fans what they liked....that the fans liked
the melodies of three dollar bill ya'll and the hardness of
significant other, so they decided to combine the two

they were shaping their music because of what the fans
liked

if that were me i'd say well, it's MY art, MY music so i'll
do it the way I want to

well put!

And actually, in the environment of this board, you're being
alot more invidualistic if you admit you like some popular
music out there ;-)

But also to listen to Aphex Twin just to make some sort of a
statement is a crazy thing to do. You either like something
or not... if you listen to any type of music for any other
reason than simply liking it. Well i'm sorry, but i think
that's a little pathetic. You don't need things like that to
be an individual.

linkin park havn't sold out.

they're music is music that everyone will like. thus its not
groundbreaking. its music like 'give us something we can
dance to' and not like 'k, i want you guys to spend a little
more time and energy on your next cd so it will put all
other cds in your category to shame'. no. why? cause
neither THEY nor the big companies want that. they all want
money. they can get that by making music like all the other
million guitar freaks (no offence to guitar players here).

its just here have a fast go and forget me. i think its
sick. this kind of music is anti-art.

Yeah i've heard fred say that as well. The limpbizkit-fans
also get to decide which songs should be released as singles
right?

LimpBizkit is indeed a good example of a band that sells
out. If another type of music was popular right now, i'm
positive fred durst would be making THAT type of music.

But even so... i don't think that makes limp bizkit evil or
something. There are millions of kids out there that
honestly enjoy listening to limp bizkit (hm... i must admit
i find that hard to imagine ;-)).

I mean... yeah, limp bizkit is a pathetic band and
personally i think their music is horrible, and they are big
sellouts. But i still don't think that makes fred durst the
antichrist or something.

"i guess what i'm trying to say is that i've been taken the
piss out of for years by people because of the music i
listen to

and now, when stuff that comes out that's not too dissimilar
to what i listen to....they're all like "wow this is great!"

That is fucked up though... i can understand your
frustration there. Just find some comfort in the thought
that you got there first. :-D

Nothing wrong with popularity... The Beatles were like NSync
times ten.

But Linkin Park is glossy, overproduced cheese for 14 year
olds... I'd like them to be the victim of a sniper attack.
They may like RDJ, but they lack the balls to ever do what
Richie does... BE REAL ARTISTS, dedicated to crafting some
meaningful music. You can tell by their asinine lyrics (they
hate the world, and are SOOOO sad, yet I bet mommy bought
them their electric guitars years ago, and they party every
night) and their RIDICULOUSLY overdone videos that they're
just doing what will get them rich.

I'd like to hear them be truly creative... they're obviously
adequate musicians. I wonder what they could do if they had
the testicular fortitude.

I really don't dislike Linkin Park, I'm not saying their
music is crap, my original point was that I hate it when
popular bands are irresponsible enough to name-drop whether
it be for respect or not. Heck I listened to Linkin Park
like every day a few months ago just out of escapism (plus
this girl I liked was into them, but that's not the point :D
..) ..
In comparison to Aphex I'd say they're music is terrible..
but some on this boards (Amon, et al) are right in saying
that they're not sellouts. I made the same defense of Avril
Lavigne that if you're never underground in the first place,
how can you be sellout? Anyway, my beef now with LP is not
the music, it's the name dropping and that's all.

Don't be so selfish :-p Isn't it a good thing if maybe some
people who have never heard of aphex twin, get to know his
music through limp bizkit... and thus begin their musical
journey towards more meaningful music by real artists.

I'm sure richard will never sell out (change his music to

who cares which people (or how many) buy his records? It

I suppose it is a wee bit selfish, and I apologize for
that.. but my main concern is not with people discovering
and enjoying and understanding Aphex & co. .. My fear rests
with the folks who hear the name, buy drukqs, play it for
all their middle school buddies at parties and say 'Whoa
listen to this cool beat!' and skip all the piano tracks and
become pseudo-fans who know the name but not the man RDJ and
what he's about. Same concept goes for BoC, only to a
different crowd. It's now misunderstood and featured on
every chillout and easy listening compilation known to man,
including an MTV compilation. It's totally ignoring the
deeper meaning in favor of the surface sound of it. I think
there should be fewer fans, ones who discover it on their
own. The fans that DO discover it will have made the effort,
thereby showing that they had genuine interest in the genre
and are willing to understand it rather than just consuming
it.

Look i understand what you are saying :-) And i pity those
people that will only listen to the crazy druqks-tracks
because it makes them look cool at parties. And the people
that only listen to Boc for relaxation purposes... i pity
them even more, because they don't know what they're
missing.

But what i don't understand is why this should bother you?
The fact that these "pseudo fans" exist doesn't change the
way you listen to Aphex or Boc does it?

Everyone is on his own personaly musical journey. And some
people will always choose to only listen to music on a very
shallow level, whilst other people (like you and me
apparantly) dive really deep into it. But does that make the
shallow listener a lesser person or something? I personally
don't think so, as long as it makes him happy :-)
