I keep wanting to call you george.. hehe :D. You have a point very well made, and in some ways I stand corrected. It most certianly does not make them lesser people for listening to the music on a shallow level, far be it form me to pass judgement on anyone.. I'm not God's great gift either. I think it's more what oscillik said; it's just frustrating. It's frustrating to think you find a fellow fan (which are rare anyway) and then after talking with them realize that they just have a few mp3s they don't know the names of, or have this song with a 'funky noise for a drum'. I just think that the artists and their audiences deserve better than this surface-deep listening that should be reserved for pop music. After all, that's what it's for. If they get enjoyment out of Aphex simply for pop-music type reasons, then more power to them for tackling it. I just think that it's a waste and that they might as well be listening to Alice Deejay instead and save themselves the trouble. As for liking it to be hip, well, that's just dumb. I guess I have done it to some extent, what with the occasional elitist attitude, but I am talking about not really liking it, but that's obvious. Anyway.. hope this clarifies a little, but rest assured your point is well taken and I'm beginning to reconsider my arguments. Cheers!

i once had a hair on my asshole named linkin park, and i must say i found him distinctly more likeable than those fuckwastes that stole his name. he also made more creative music, even while coping with the limitations of being a rectal hair. the douchecrew linkin park are to aphex what blackhead puss is to einsteins special theory of relativity. gosh, maybe that was too mean.. nope, theyre worth 1/4 of one twat hair. got it all out now. peace and love

man you guys need to get lives. i've read some really sad, shallow things on this thread. let people listen to and TALK ABOUT artists they like. you obviously feel you have the right to come here and talk about electronic musicians so don't criticize other people for doing the same things. and stop making baseless judgements on people you don't even know (the popular bands and musicians you're criticizing for doing what you do everyday - listening to and talking about good music).

Maybe I was being a bit too elitist. If I was coming on too strong I am sorry. I still wish people wouldn't name drop like that, but that's just me.. it's a free country and they can say what they want. I'm not angry at them particularly, just what happens or could happen because of them. But hey, it's not the end of the world. Still, I'm just voicing my opinion and think I have the right to do so. I just have a few personal cases of the annoyances I'm talking about. But if I was being rude, then I want to apologize.

you don't know them and you can't just assume that cos you don't like their music (if you make music, would you want to be treated like dirt just because someone doesn't like your songs?) they don't "understand" aphex etc. and are just doing it for the money. think about it, if they REALLY only cared about fame they'd suck up to popular acts - not acts who sell under 30,000 copies of their albums. for them to ADMIT their interests is them putting themselves out there as "weird music admirers" AND doing the electronica artists a favor by creating interest in their music.
linkin park for example. their remix album, they could've had really famous people on there. i urge you to look at the back of the cd in the store; lemme know how many names you recognize. there are some big names (jonathan davis from korn, aaron lewis from staind, jay gordon from orgy) but it's mostly underground hip-hop musicians. that was a risk they took cos they LOVE the music. and linkin park is just one example. trust me, unless you're a manufactured pop artist who doesn't write their own songs, you're not going to get anywhere without LOVING music (whatever the preference).

I see your point, in some respects you're beginning to change my mind. However, I think you've got my angle a little wrong. I never actually said that I disliked their music, in fact, as a sort of guilty pleasure band I listened to them quite a bit a few months ago. Second, I never really 'treated them like dirt' as I remember. My main concern was not that they improve their music or bug off; they seem pretty friendly and I agree from reading an interview and bio here and there that they DO love their music and music in general. Believe it or not, I have taken a look at the back of the Reanimation CD before and, like you predicted, recognized very few of the names. You're absolutely right in this respect.
Aside from this, I think you had a good argument concerning their 'public statements'. So the point you've convinced me of is that they were OK to be truthful and voice their opinions. Point well taken, I stand corrected.. I was being a bit stubborn perhaps. the thing I am still annoyed at is the way that people will inevitably start bringing questionable publicity to the still semi-underground IDM scene. I don't want IDM, or some watered down (but still labeled IDM) form of it to do what trance and DnB did and go on the radio only to become as popular as anything Britney Spears or Nickelback cranks out. It's like this: why is Paul Oakenfold doing Global 'underground' mixes when he's played right alongside the most popular music in the industry and at the same price? I don't want the same thing to happen to the one electronic realm that is still sacred. The instinct that annoyed me when I heard about LP and Thom Yorke's namedropping was the same instinct that made me gleefully happy to hear that RDJ had turned down Madonna's collaberation offer (that was true, right?). I can't imagine what a musical travesty that would have been.
So before I write like a 10k here, I just wanted to say that your point was well made and taken and I think you are right in the arguments that you made

i really enjoyed that last couple of posts uviol :-) It's nice when you can have a discussion with someone that is openminded enough to actually listen to what the other person is saying.
And i actually recognise your feelings in the last really long post. In some ways it is a sad feeling when some form of underground music becomes "big" (especially because it's usually some copycat that gets to take credit for it, and not the original pioneers). But it's something that cannot be stopped and that's happened many times before. I always felt it was a little sad that grunge-music became so popular (and even today there are 100's of singers out there who try to sound just like eddie vedder). And i'm sure the original punkfans also felt sad when punk became 'big', same with the original hiphop-fans.
I have no idea where idm will go next, and if it ever will become hugely popular. But i am confident that no matter what happens there will always also be proper artists who make challenging and meaningful music. I really don't think any of the artists we listen to today (afx, ae, sp... etc) will ever compromise. If idm really does become a hype someday, it will be new artists that make a more shallow form of it. Richard will always do what he wants to do himself... only difference is more people will be listening to it.
If it wasn't for Aphex Twin being mentioned in every radiohead or bjork-article a while back... i probably wouldn't have discovered his wonderful music himself! In many ways i feel thankful for thom yorke's namedropping :-) And one day atleast a handful of people will also feel thankful for linkin park's namedropping.
And when idm does become huge and played hourly on mtv... you can be sure there will be a counter-reaction, and some form of new and exciting undergroundmusic will be created... only we will all be grumpy old man who say things were better in "our time" ;-)

Sigh... i miss seinfeld though :-( Last week i saw the episode where they pretented to be Murphy and O'Brien to get in a limo :-p
classic seinfeld..
"Hello, Ma? It's me. Guess where I am? In the back of a limo. No, nobody died. It's a long story, I can't tell you now. Because I can't. I said I can't. If I could, I would. Would you stop it. All right, look, I'm getting off. No, I'm not telling you. How's this - I'm never telling you. I don't care. No. Fine. Never!"

yeah, we don't care about credentials... and also, music is in the ears of the beholder so to speak... you know good music TO YOU when you hear it, but Linkin Park could be the best band ever to some people, and I'm sure they are to some people... and that's cool... music is supposed to be entertainment, and on a deeper level it should make you feel something, and if some people find enjoyment and feeling from Linkin Parks music then great... I don't, and I don't like them, but still...

" ...so don't act so surprised when people call you stupid afterwards :-p
And about linkin park and this discussion in general... The funkmaster said it very well in his last post, i have nothing more to add really. Let everyone just enjoy the music they like or like to make. The world would be a boring place if everyone liked exactly the same things.
And isn't Adema the band of Jonathan Davis' brother? That would explain the similarities...
