It's a simple reason but it's this: they don't have singles. I think singles in a way detract from the rest of the cd. I was thinking on why I didnt buy the Chemical B's new cd. The only song I cared for is It came from Africa. I didn't think the rest was all that good.
The thing with Autechre is that no song stand out amoung the rest on the cd; each song helps the other. We have our favs but its not like Autechre said 'lets really focus on this one cool idea. and for the rest of the cd? I don't know...lets just pull some stuff together'.

good point there... they just make good albums...they dont think of a single and 9 more tracks.

very true....I kinda think of their EPs as little mini Albums where they are deciding where to head next...
I've never really liked bands that get into that whole single/album/tour routine...that just shows they think more about money than the music...
AFX is good with EPs as well...he doesn't get into releasing singles just to promote albums....

thats because they dont make an album to sell as many copies as possible, they make an album to create some new interesting music work, so that they keep advancing in their music investigation.... just the same as britney

yea their eps are basically where they work on their new experimental direction, working on an ep they continue releasing material but with less preasure than when they release an album, which is expected to be perfect.... but in any case they have done it to through a single into the charts

lol i can see you're kidding about britney Nacmat...uh..i would hope you're kidding anyway :s
The thing about AFX that i hate is that basically ALL his cds are compilations of his work..not true albums that flow into eachother. I got like...2 or 3 actual albums in my like 13 or so cds by him.
-SAW I and SAW II (compilations) -Come to daddy (compliation) -51/32 (compilation) -ICBYD (compilation) -Classics (compilation)
and arn't the AB series compilations of work by him?

yah, they have EPs, but they dont centralize whole CD around just one song, which i think is cool.

i don't think autechre singles would sell good anyway, but that's a good point :)
as for aphex twin releasing only compilations... well, that doesn't bother me at all, it's because of his way of working... and every afx album has its own unity...
(sorry for the bad english)

SAW 2 isn't a compilation, really. He put all of that material together in the same time frame.
And for Amonbrune: Come With Us, the entire cd, is excellent, not just It Began In Afrika.
However I do understand your problems with singles, and I absolutely agree with you.

I don't mind singles, but yeah it is stupid to focus on one or two songs for an album, and then have the rest as filler... but, if an artist spends a lot of time on all of it, and trys to make each song as good as he can, and then releases a couple singles, I see nothing wrong with that...

i agree with the no singles thing being good. i think aphex's singles work well though, because they sound like singles. e.g. come to daddy and windowlicker is the perfect single - catchy, not too repetetive, lots of different sounds there, interesting production etc.
i don't suppose autechre could have singles (other than say basscadet) becuase their material is either too far out or too repetitive (which is not a bad thing).
