Authecre are bullshit.....discuss

Ken on 2001-10-20 00:08 [#00043809]

A while back I saw them play live....a friend who got me
into Aphex was going so....... It had to be one of the most
pointless waste's of £12 ever....two guys hunched over a
pair of lap tops, no lights, no acknowledgement of the
audience...no enterainment, no point... a few times I
thought they were having technical problems.. but I was told
that, that was a track....then a week or so ago I saw their
new album in the library ... hired it out of curiosity, just
to make sure.....some of the tracks sounded like there was
dust on the cd....maybe I'm a bit old fashioned.....but if
that's cutting edge....I'd prefere the Rolling Stones any
fucking day

pyroglif on 2001-10-20 00:17 [#00043810]

i heard a few of there trax and i didnt think much to them
either

blip on 2001-10-20 00:17 [#00043811]

yep your old fashioned.

YOu can't go to an Autechre venue and expect a big Rolling
Stones like concert display .. their art form is music not
"Entertainment".

And just so you know, Aphex doesn't really do more than
hunch over his laptop at gigs .. so !

May as well stick to your Coldplay and Limp Bizkit Concerts,
that should keep you entertained! :)

easyjesus© from who knows where... on 2001-10-20 00:24 [#00043812]

what cd of their's did you check out? if your starting out
on them i would suggest tri repetae, it's a pretty straight
forward album. I can't really get into their newer stuff.

blip on 2001-10-20 00:33 [#00043814]

personally i find confield quite refreshing, although
admittedly it is quite a difficult record to come to terms
with. LP5 and EP7 I think is the pinnacle of Autechre ...
but the earlier stuff like Tri, Incunabula, Amber and such,
are perhaps more suitable starting places -

you do have to ease yourself into it .. and with an attitude
that is looking whether the cd sounds like it is skipping or
so / or how it compares to "sticky fingers" - probably won't
allow one to appreciate autechre to its full potential .. or
so.

Quoth from Berlin on 2001-10-20 03:11 [#00043822]

through all of this Confield discussion, I still haven't
found the time yet to go listen to it... I have not d/l'ed
mp3's from Ae... lol... should I take the time to go out and
buy it, or listen to it first w/mp3's?

rudheismaboir on 2001-10-20 03:49 [#00043827]

autechre surpasses most peoples' mental ability to hear
sound on microscopic timescales. the first time i hear a
new album, i don't like it but then patterns begin to
emerge. pure genius shit.

ung-youzx on 2001-10-20 04:10 [#00043832]

may as well buy it .. sort of won't work as well if it is
mp3 ? that's just my opinion.

it is worth having as cd - quite cool cover art also.

but then if you tight - you tight baby

rudheismaboir on 2001-10-20 04:36 [#00043837]

yea you definitely have to have it on disc or there's no way
you'll hear everything that's going on.

DblHeLX from moon on 2001-10-20 04:58 [#00043842]

haha , have you seen AFX live??
he practicly hides behind a podium!!!
autechre is great in my oppinion but whatever you think is
justifiable by me.

You have to try to understand what Autechre is trying to
provoke in their music/sounds. They are trying to capture
the complexity of architecture/engineering through their
tracks. They are trying to show people that there is beauty
behind the sterile nature of mechanics, engineering,
architecture, and mathematics. The name Autechre, sounds
like the word Architecture.
One man can look at a piece of paper full of mathematical
graphs and think, "This is amazing." While another man can
look at the same graph and think, "What the hell is this?
Just some random bullshit." Try to understand the
complexity of their work. Confield (in my opinion) is the
best Autechre album. EP 7 is also amazing.

rediv i d er on 2001-10-20 07:53 [#00043883]

in my opinion some of the stuff on confield has gotten so
complex that it's almost organic and mushy. like at the
most basic level of biology, everything operates on rigid
physical principles, but when the "struts" "crossbeams"
(continuing the architectural metaphor) are small enough and
you have enough of them, you can get a really organic feel
to it.

Hoo-key from Its a secret on 2001-10-20 14:33 [#00043920]

LP5 is a monument in music.

Ken on 2001-10-20 15:05 [#00043928]

That's a good point about maths a_ I hate Maths..... but as
a fan of Jazz and Classical music I can appreciate
complexity.......but I basically like a good tune whether
it's complex or simple...and it one thing Authecre seem to
lack ...a tune

od from perth on 2001-10-20 15:12 [#00043929]

im not autechres biggest fan, but there is more than tunes
to music, ya know what i mean?
music is sposed to have a "feel" to it, carry an emotion, i
think thats the "thing" to music.
i dunno, this is just how i think of it.

rF from purf on 2001-10-20 15:25 [#00043931]

like mr dust said above, music doesn't have to have drums,
bass, melody to be music, in my opinion music is something
that is interesting/fun/nice to listen to... and it just
seems that confield is a very interesting album, however i
do prefer lp5 because it is interesting/nice and also
challenging to listen to (ie. 777; fold4,wrap5; under
BOAC)..

Hoo-key from Its a secret on 2001-10-20 16:36 [#00043942]

Confield sucked except for Uvivol.

Not Him on 2001-10-20 21:23 [#00044003]

Autechre manipulate sound -- that's it. They aren't mapping
out the inner-workings of human consciousness. They're
making tunes that sound good to them.

As far as Confield goes, you would be better off pirating a
copy of Opcode Max. With a little practice, you'll be
banging out your own wanky doodle algorithmic Autechre tunes
in no time.

Tajl_z0rz on 2001-10-20 21:33 [#00044004]

im a huge autechre fan and what the HELL are you talking
about "not music"
just be quiet

noisegenerator on 2001-10-20 21:46 [#00044007]

not a very constructive post.

ken, you're not going to 'get' autechre on first listen -
there's too much going on in the music for that, and it's
not designed for instant gratification. but the effect after
numerous plays is far more rewarding than a lot of other
music. a singles band like the rolling stones is about as
far from a fair comparison as you can make. if you're
bothered, try stepping up to autechre with, say, boards of
canada.

-a from --- on 2001-10-20 23:11 [#00044023]

There's a whole sub-culture that is obsessed with sound, and
sound manipulation. Sound manipulation in my opinion is an
art. Some will of course think of it as pretentious, but
it's far from it. Comparing Autechre to the Rolling Stones
would be like comparing a flower to a car; absolutely no
relation. Autechre is music. If someone were just being
introduced to Autechre I would not recommend Confield as an
introduction. Try Amber first, and then EP 5, 7, etc.
Confield is for hardcore fans who truly love Autechre, and
understand the complexity of their work.

Ken on 2001-10-21 00:49 [#00044039]

Sorry folks but I still think it easier to manipulate sound
than it is to write a cool sounding tune....especially with
today\'s software..... interesting sound manipulation for me
would be Lifeforms or Dead Cities by FSOL.... it\'s ambient
and experimential in terms of sound but it still sounds
musical

easyjesus© from who knows where... on 2001-10-21 01:08 [#00044041]

i still say listen to "tri repetae" with headphones, when i
first listened to it i too was a little put off. but then
listen to it a couple more times and you will see that there
are melodies and such. this album is not really "sound
manipulation" it's more "melodic percussion". fsol remind me
of the orb.

Bogus on 2001-10-21 03:33 [#00044053]

I don't really thin autechre's music has that much tought
into it...

to me it's 2 guys jamming with whatever sounds they can pull
oput of their machines.

LeMoN from penisville on 2001-10-21 06:08 [#00044069]

Some of their music can sound overly pretentious at times,
but whenever I start to think negatively of them I remember
such genius compositions as "Pen Expers", "Piezo",
"Eggshell", "444", "Arch Carrier", and others...

different strokes for different folks. When I first heard
autechre's music, it blew me away. I downloaded every
track I could find and then bought all of their albums. I'm
a filmmaker and they've been a big inspiration for my
visuals.
