Non electric (sort of) bands

M.........mM(mMm)Mm.........M on 2001-09-19 21:38 [#00034310]

I highly recommend the album "mellow gold" from the artist
"beck". Aphex twin remixed his song "devil's haircut" (from
a different album) and said it was the most normal song he's
ever heard. It was. It was the wrong song. Listen to track 9
on mellow gold "steal my body home"... This song is so rich
in sound, probably because not all of it is composed on
computers. He uses real instruments I guess, but he sure
gets strange sounds out of them. He records stuff, I think
then puts that onto his computer. Steal my body home is so
depressing and humorous at the same time. The melodies are
so rich because they aren't computer stamped out. Then at
the end he makes a hilarious composition out of pots and
pans and typewriters, and funny notes that are all out of
pitch. It actually has a sound quality just about equal to
autechre. But while autechre on say tri rep, have to tweak
their sounds forever on computers to make them right, his
sounds already are tweaked and interesting because they came
from real life where all the little subtle interesting
things about sound come naturally. Anyway, post suggestions
of good music that is not so computer oriented if you have
them.

Oh, gee, good tip there, dickface. You know what else, you
should look into this guy Michael Jackson, I think he's
going to be big in a few years.

Really? I'll look into it.

I listened to Beck for a bit..but found the same problem as
I do with most commercial bands..like Bubblegum after the
Initial sugar rush it all just gets gummy and flavourless
and pain in the jaw on repeat use..
On the same note I find the Noise Rock bands like those on
Touch and Go and Am Rep labels to be almost like the rock
equivalent of Aphex and Warp and such..the same strain..of
subversive, quirky, scary weirdness can be found in bands
like Butthole Surfers, The Jesus Lizard, Big Black, Rapeman,
Chrome, Helios Creed, Cows etc...just my personal
observation...

ross on 2001-09-20 00:17 [#00034423]

well, the new mercury rev album is one of my favorites up
there with ok computer..i like beck though, and steal my
body home is very nice..i like soul sucking jerk (title?) as
well

hamburgler on 2001-09-20 00:28 [#00034427]

check out the Swans... Their later stuff is kind of like
SAW2 but with Really fucked guitars added... called
Soundtracks for the Blind

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-09-20 00:35 [#00034433]

SWANS can be a bit heavy going for most...looove their early
stuff though..m..www.. might like the side project "Skin"
and "World of Skin" Strings, Accoustic guitars, Pianos
operatic singer plus poetry..full of the kinda rich sounding
sonic pallettes mW keeps refering to though
and btw..have you tried The Legendary Pink Dots? Tear
Garden? Edward Ka'spel? you might like those too
mW))..$@#//<>+_

hamburgler on 2001-09-20 00:37 [#00034434]

yeah but the Swans really early stuff is almost unlitenable
it's so slow and brutal... also try My Bloody Valentine or
the Classic stuff like Velvet underground or mid 70's David
Bowie (like Low)

f.l.e.a from NZ on 2001-09-20 00:42 [#00034440]

I love that unlistenable stuff :)..own it all expcept till
the "mouth of infinity album"...that was just the stuff I
was into..still am..to certain degree..but I have a wide
range of musical interests..and them I cram em all into my
own music...lots of people find my gsr stuff unlistenable
too..hehehehe

hamburgler on 2001-09-20 00:44 [#00034442]

mine too...gsr stuff?

Caucasian Slouch on 2001-09-20 00:49 [#00034444]

Blur have been quite good on their later stuff.

hamburgler on 2001-09-20 00:50 [#00034445]

fuck that britpop garbage shit

Caucasian Slouch on 2001-09-20 00:54 [#00034446]

"Britpop"? Fuck you, you lazy pigeon-holing, cock-eating
shit.

Caucasian Slouch on 2001-09-20 00:57 [#00034450]

Most English bands beat US acts hands-down.

hamburgler on 2001-09-20 00:59 [#00034451]

English bands do beat us bands hands down... but not fucking
Blur!!! yeah I shouldn't pigeonhole them cause they are so
experimental..just like those fucking rip offs
radiohead.....electronic my ass....

Caucasian Slouch on 2001-09-20 01:11 [#00034452]

Ok, I have to admit that Radiohead's experimentationis just
retreading ground that others have already troddenlong
before, and it's annoying that they're widely considered as
visionaries because Kid A and Amnesiac are a little more
"difficult" than mainstream music. However, these albums do
have some great moments in their own right (although neither
is as consistently great as OK Computer.).

Caucasian Slouch on 2001-09-20 01:15 [#00034453]

Blur arent even one of my favourite bands; I just resent the
labelling of all English bands as Britpop.

Quoth from Berlin on 2001-09-20 04:04 [#00034492]

I enjoy listening to the experimental trip-hop/alternative
sound... ie; Portishead, Soul Coughing, and Dreadzone
(although that's more "techno" than anything) I really love
Soul Coughing... they've broken up, but still, to this day
fucking rule. I saw them live and was greatly impressed with
their sound... much better than who they were opening for...
Everclear = Eversucky.

i dig John Zorn and his various side projects..also Bill
Laswell and his numerous projects though most of Laswell's
stuff is filed under Electronic music

ross on 2001-09-20 06:38 [#00034516]

DUST my friend you are very wise my hat is off to you as are
my socks THE BARON HAS SPOKEN!

M.........mM(mMm)Mm.........M on 2001-09-21 18:37 [#00035224]

Cool I wrote them all down. I just get tired for a brief
while of the cookie cutter stamped out electronic stuff
sometimes. Like in squarepusher, every drum hi hat or
whatever is exactly the same, unless he tweaks it. A lot of
aphex twin sounds non electronic, like Stuff off the RDJ
album, cybmols sometimes hitting a bit longer than the
previous cymbol hit, small flaws in the sound here and there
etc. Windowlicker too. A lot of classical piano music is so
good because the subtle sound quality is so detailed because
it's played live. Non electric does get boring after awhile,
you need the direct control over what you're doing in the
electric environment.
