Have a couple of CDs I want to rip to mp3s, and dunno what program to use. Don't want to use MusicMatch, but whatever, what programs do you guys use, preferably free download :) |

i use musicmatch jukebox. you can rip mp3's up to a 320bit rate if im not mistaken. . .its nice(for pc) |

is the thing to use. It''s free and it works really well and it has no spyware or bullshit. I generally use it to extract to plain wav files then encode them myself with Lame or Ogg Vorbis. If you want to make Oggs there's a great drag and drop interface... you just drag your wav files onto the fish. If you want to make mp3s Razorlame is the shit. |

make . They sound better than mp3s at the same filesize. use quality setting 6 for CD quality tracks unless it's death metal - then you want quality 8. |

If you want any sort of hardware support, don't make oggs. :-) But they are technically superior to mp3s in many ways. The best lossy compression format would probably be musepack, though. |

By hardware support, perverted whale means like an mp3 player or boombox that plays mp3s. But Winamp plays oggs so I'm happy. I was fucking outraged when I discovered the mp3 boombox I got wouldn't play VBR mp3s. |

oh fuck all these non free progs, even my 123 CD to Mp3 Ripper only lets you get the first five tracks without paying fortunetly, my Beethoven/Mozart CDs only include 5 tracks per CD, YEAH! |

Like fleetmouse said, use RazorLame or WinLame to make your mp3s. |

And when using lame use the option: --preset standard This will encode using the best settings unless you have very good ears and very good equipment, in which case use: --preset extreme The extreme preset is definitely what you want to use for extremely fuzzy distorted music with lots of crunchy trebly detail. That way you hear every ugly snarl. |

Yes, --alt-preset standard is good enough for about 98% of my CDs. There are a few oddball CDs like Autechre's Anvil Vapre that don't sound right even when encoded with 320 Kbps --alt-preset insane, but they are rare. Second Bad Vilbel is like a spit in the face of the mp3 format. :-) |

ogg can't encode the track well either. I'm not sure if it's better or worse, but it is bad in a different way. |

You know what? Ogg at quality 8 is pretty damn close. I can't really hear a difference when I a/b the CD and the Ogg. And that's with an M-audio card, an old Marantz amplifier and Grado headphones. Maybe the noise at the beginning sounds a bit more spacious or detailed on the CD. It's hard to tell. The bitrate goes as high as 470 at times. But the file is 23 megs, which is about what I'd expect a Lame VBR file to weigh in at. |

If ya want 100%, forget everything you heard. use EAC. Exact Audio Copy. it's like LAME for mp3encoders, EAC for extractors. 'choice of the pros', as Dwld called it. |

Both --api and ogg with a high q are pretty good. I wouldn't notice unless I was paying attention. Listen carefully when the beat begins. There is a very high-frequency tone above the music. This gets pretty mangled up. |

preset standard comes out about the same size as a 192 k mp3, depending on how much detail is in the music. preset extreme is more likely to be 20% of the size of the uncompressed wav, like a 256k CBR file but better sounding. |

I've been debating on discontinuing my mp3pro collection and re-ripping back to regular mp3's. At least my AFX collection anyway. So how much bigger is the file size on lame preset extreme versus standard? |

extreme will be about 25% bigger, on average, then standard. So a 4 MB track would be about 5 MB. |
