Poll: Flash in avatar?

Was thinking about this...what if it was possible to put in
a flash animation in your avatar without changing the
current rules (height, width and size).

It's quite possible to make some cool animations in for
example Swiss that doesnt use more loading(-time) than
animated gif's.

Who's up for the idea?

I made all my gifs in Animation Shop, that's the only
program I've used really. I'm not sure about the properties
of flash animations, maybe Phob can answer this one...

some computers don't even have flash.
.gif is a nice all round format, and the size restriction
keeps loading times down already, so I don't see any need to
complicate the whole avatar experience.

good idea though,...

it's not to complicate things...just to shine them up...

I wouldnt mind flash-animation under 12Kb...you can't put in
any sound, just text-animation (maybe some pictures too)...

It's quite easy using Swiss

would it be hard to put restristions on these things?
(sounds pop-ups etc..)

would it be possible for someone to do something destructive
with this format? because if they could, I doubt that the
threat of "banning" would deter people from being wise guys
and trying to wreck the forum for kicks, I remember a long
time ago at the board when people first realised they could
use html (before banning was introduced) people were
deliberatly messing around with the board and glitching it.

I don't think popups and sound is possible at <12Kb

heh,. good point,..

I don't think I really understand the format enough to
criticise it,.. I think it's just a "afraid of the unknown"
thingy

Yes- gifs are probably the most portable graphics format.

I just made 30 sec. animation with fading out letters that
said xltronic.com...best quality in SWiSH...it was 2.7Kb...

now which is more portable JC? ;)

flash, mostly don't want to watch flash..

By portable I mean it runs on more systems and w/o the need
for plugins- not the file size...

You'd call a java program portable, but you would hardly say
it was efficient ;)

about to get some stats on site access to prove my point ;)

entertaining...

flash avatars, good idea!

i doubt the webmasters would accept it though, they've
probably thought of it already...

Please - no Flash. Animations on web pages where you are
supposed to be reading (mostly) are very distracting. I have
animated gifs set to not loop for this reason.

But this is just my opinion. I don't have Flash installed on
this computer anyway.

good idea, if you hate the distractiveness just turn off
picture downloading.. just a tought: enabling flash avatars
for paying members only... makes the 10$ more worthwhile...

If you use flash here I'll stop coming here. It makes my
computer run like a bag of shit, does the same to my comp at
home and I'm sick of the flash adverts on web sites BURNING
their image into my brain. SWF is good on some systems but
not others. I despise flash. Makes things run like a bag of
shit.

offline JAroen from the pineal gland on 2003-01-09 07:33 [#00507751]

make an "enable flash avatar" button then....

its a little more complicated to use the object insert tag
rather than use the img src tag... if that would matter at
all

over 90% of web users have at least flash player version 5
installed. click here for stats.

plus, I'm pretty sure the 10% of people who don't are not
going to be surfing this message board. of course, the use
of flash avatars could be abused with pop-ups and whatnot.

but what if the flash-avatars had to go through a moderator
first? (plus- swf. must be under 12Kb...don't think you can
cause that much havoc with that....)

Yes, but in a community of nearly 200o, that means almost
200 people here would not be able to use it.

Junktion: Avatars going through mods would mean more work
for the mods (we do do some "behind the scenes" work,
honest!). Imagine you get some people asking to change there
avatars a couple of times a day...

I just now theres a good solution to this...hmm....how about
- make a decent avatar or be banned! ...that would cover it
all ;)

We've had no problems with Flash-based avatars over at
watmm. Mongoose and Centurix have used Flash for their
avatars for ages.

Good suggestion I think!
