Yes it does- if you have an extremely fascistic state, you are judged by your value to society. You are worth only so much as you contribute to others. In this way the forced sense of community is akin to rigid communism. In a communistic society where everyone has to work for others either: a) You make people work and punish them if they don't (similair to the fascistic totalitarian govt.) or b) You let people just do as much work as they want, some people just doss all the time, everyones quality of life declines as a result. In a right wing capitalistic society with a generous welfare state it's the same situation "b)" in the bit about communism. |

But I've seen what happens on small communes- there are people who do a neglible amount of work and take more than they put in. The sort of people who live in communes tend not to be the sort to tell the lazy people to do their share. If I lived on one I'd get them kicked out or at least have a go at them. Instead the other people on the commune just bitch about the lazy people behind their back. People aren't forced to work in the UK. There are plenty of "career dole scum" types- just go to Barry. Very, very few people in the UK starve- those are mainly elderly/mentally ill people. |

I've worked as a labourer, I've worked on Barry Council, I've seen first hand people who do a few months seasonal work a year to stop losing their benefits. I've worked in a factory where one employee was always taking tuesday afternoons off. Turns out he was collecting dole too... I've worked with people who are inherently lazy. If people can have a reasonable quality of life without working, a number of them won't. If I got the same amount of money on dole as I would in this job I wouldn't work. |

Yeah, but you won't. Dole is a pittance. Corporate fraud, cuts in corporation tax and the ability of the rich to employ accountants to move their money around to avoid paying tax is more of a problem than a few people who are happy to live in poverty on the dole. |

No you're right- I do get paid more than people on the dole, but that's because I do a job useful to society. If either a) my wages decreased or b) dole increased, I would give serious thought to going on the dole... I'm going to avoid getting a pension, have my own assets and get a good accountant for "tax avoidance" when I retire. The people on dole still get "money for nothing" even if the rich get "a lot for a little". My quality of life would still improve if people who claimed dole their whole lives never existed... I sound like Dickens' Scrooge now :) |

Ha ha ha! You obviously don't know many people who live on dole! It's really not that hard- cock up interviews, get sacked from whichever job you get set up with, do seasonal work (outdoors in summer seems to be the one of choice), there are lots of ways around it. Having kids practically guarantees that they won't take your benefits away. I'm for a US style system- you can claim 2 years "jobseekers allowance" max during your life. Obviously, if people are injured and genuinely unable to work they should have some form of sustenance from the govt. |

Saddam doesn't dare to use his weapons of mass destruction on America's allies because he had them during the full scale attack on Iraq and didn't use them, simply because he was affraid of being nuked himself... Now look at North Korea, America thinks it can resolve this conflict the diplomatic way and that country is practicly parading the weapons of mass-destruction... I think it's an attack without any respect for the old value that war should only be the very last option. And I think it's highly arrogant to think you can't be hurt back and do as you please. All I can see coming out of this is a massive increase of terrorists, a conflict between Turkey and Iraq over the kurdish territories, a million refugees, huge casualties, destroyed cities, more poverty and burning oil(if saddam decided to set fire to the oilfields). Of course I hate Saddam just as much as the pro-attack people but the situation isn't simply resolved with an attack and the risks are huge. |

It looks like we are drawing ever closer to a war that I truely thought we were going to avoid... my boss got a call this morning from his daughter, saying that her husband has been called up... hes a reservist.. and not a medical one. This didnt even happen during the last gulf war.
