i have made a bunch of sounds etc on different apparatus, and now i'd like to get them into my comp and make a track. i was planning to record all the stuff to as wav, but what software is best for combining them to make a track? O:)
i don't know the 'correct' way of doing this so don't laugh me out. i just want to make a tune (don't worry, i wont be spamming it here when it is done!)
if there is some good software, preferably free and non-ms, please enlighten me. i'm a hardware girl i am; i only know how to use gadgets, not software :o

The correct way is to use Fruity Loops.

do not use Fruity Loops.
use Cubase.
it looks harder than FL, but it can be as hard as you want it to be (oo-er!). it provides more diversity than FL.

I don't know if cubase will work on Linux, and it's definitely not free.
Unfortunately I don't use Linux, so I've no idea what might be of use. Do a google for "linux mod tracker" or "linux music tracker" or some such variant

cubase and reason are good for music making, its mostly what I use to make my choons, try lots of demo's out, and see which one you like the best, personal preference and opinion are what make people choose their software...
if your working with external hardware, check out logic, its midi control is really good... if your doing some audio editing, check protools, because it owns at editing audio and the TDM plug ins are really high quality, but expensive (or not if your pirating..), if you want a mixture of both check out cubase or cakewalk.....
Also, if you have sounds you want to import to your computer, from a synth, drum machine, mini disc or whatever... you need some kind of audio interface, or a sound card, something...
the usb audiophile made by M-Audio is a pretty good IO device, there are loads to choose from though, if you do a search on google.com, for audio interfaces, you should find all kinds.
Reason and Fruityloops are pretty much the same kinda thing, except fruity has vst support, reason has rewire, so you can sync it up to a sequencer, cubase, logic... whatever.... its good for comming up with ideas, and having an all in one digital production suit.
If you allready have drums and synth's and all that jazz... I say go for a sequencer like Logic, Protools, or Cubase, you can arrange your sounds from their and add some dsp on them with vst's.
Hope this helps some, YEEEEE HAAAAAAW!@!

Oh, oops, I forgot, Live and Acid are good for sequencing your own sounds, I like Live a little more, those are great for sequencing audio too.
Check all the programs you can though and see which one/s you like...
Live, Reason, Cubase, Logic are my favorite sequencing programs I think.

I still say - the other programs only have to be as hard as you want them to be.

In simple terms, Download floops, hacked or demo, doesnt matter your still new.
Next youll want to dl a wave editor, dont start to big. Freeware could do the job for you. Audacity or Cool Edit. This will help you export the wave you need to import into floops step sequencer. Its just drop and drag on to the channels once you have the wave sample saved.
Learn how to use the 'patterns' and the 'pattern sequencer'. Also get familiar with the 'song settings' option. You will be able to increase the size of the sequencer with that.
Thats pretty much all youll need to now for a first time composition. Dont try to get too caught up in all the pro software. It will just confuse you more.

i regret NOT trying harder 'pro' level software and just sticking to fruityloops cus its easier......
....i wish i took the time to learn it properly right away.... qrter said, its not that hard and the really advanced functions you probably wont even want to use right now anyway.....
.......if everything is new to you right now and youre going to be learning no matter what, you might as well learn something more serious, it makes more sense in the long run IMO
...fruity loops is easy to learn, ive been using it for like a year or two.... and NOW, im trying to make myself learn (im very lazy you see) Cubase, Sonar 2, Logic and so on, all the really powerful 'pro' software...... if i just learnt them in the first place, when i was new to computer music in general.... well, it would make more sense in teh long run thats all

...i was just saying i regret NOT knowing all the advanced stuff, because ive just stuck with fruityloops
....in the long run it might be worth the extra effort now to learn more advanced software now is all im saying.....

Like dolleater said, this CAN be really daunting at times, but dont let it get you down.
Get an audio in interface, a basic sound editor of somekind , get a somewhat simple sequencing app (id recommend, Live, fruityloops or reason....) that works for you, and work from there.

hmm... ok if you choose between reason and fruityloops, i recommend fruityloops, at the first time it looks shitty, but you will see...
reason is the greatest shit i ever saw, you have to use another hostsequencer like cubase or logic to use some VST plug ins oder VSTi modules. go with fruityloops or a tracker, like buzz or madtracker ... or record your stuff at wavelab or soundforge to wav ... edit them in a loop prog like fruityloops or recycle (speed, pitch) and bounce it with markers .... sounds terrible i know ... "AND JUST MAKE IT FOR YOU!"

actually neetta if all you want to do is combine things into a track, why not go with Cool Edit Pro? it's really easy to mix paste things together if that's what you want. CEP 1.2 is what i use cos i'm too impatient to learn the other software i downloaded (slowly learning to make songs on fruity loops tho). real simple and a relatively smaller download than the others (especially Reason).
