a style of music that is cut up, and processed and mangled.
bit meddler brothomstates richard devine autechre kid 606 venetian snares
IMO make some pretty glitchy stuff. I think calling something glitch is a hell of a lot better then calling it IDM.

glitches are the repetitions, the bits where the music or whatever kind of stopstartstops.

that would be too simple, imo
the more you are into that stuff the harder it is to classify

download jim o'rourke's 'and i'm happy'. there's a lot of glitch in that track, especially near the end.
at least i think it's what they call glitch. i don't think o'rourke ever realized it had a name.

'glitch' sounds really arsey, very pompous etc.
'IDM' sounds like shit
'experimental electronic stuff' is too long to say
'electronica' is gay
'braindance' is the best i think, but doesnt give anything away.

yeah that's what i thought, same as with o'rourke :) but i don't think they at some point say: ok we're gonna implement some glitch in this next track. it is a made up term, no?

You´re probably right, at least regarding earlier glitch records (which sounded a lot like musique concrete). nowadays I think glitch artists are aware of it as "glitch"

some of that 2002 ekkehard ehler album (plays) still sounds a lot like musique concrete. i guess it's all old terms that are brought back to live again

I´ve only heard ekkehard ehler´s 15 tracks on fällt´s InvalidObject series, which by the way is some of the best things I´ve ever heard. I like this idea of "movements within closed systems".

i'll have to check that out. does ekkehard ehler explain his vision somewhere, mean, is that where you get the "movements
within closed systems" idea from? i can see what you mean, but i would love to do some further reading about that. anyway, plays is awesome stuff. besides the more abstract stuff there's some beautifully manipulated orchestral tracks on it (the most beautiful stuff i heard since autechre's vletrmx)

I got the information from mille-plateaux: EKKEHARD EHLERS is part of the Frankfurt based duo AUTOPOIESES. His first solo album is a monument of the new electronic school. ‘BETRIEB’ (business, activity) deals with the movements within closed systems. Fluctuation and the characteristics of moving elements within defined boundaries, the game of forming and dissolving structures is the motive of ‘BETRIEB’. The elements of the tracks are drawn, the samples are interconnected by graphics. Object of this treatment is to produce a complex acoustic system.Like on his works with AUTOPOIESES the musical archives are sources, especially compositions from Arnold Schönberg and Charles Ives. In the microtonal and functional musics that are currently popular, content and meaning are established in their structural concepts, their characteristics determined by soft and hardware. What this implies remains gray to most producers and their productions. Tinkering is still a problem in electronic music. What is being asked for with this album is a new attempt to approach more complex thematics and modes of expression. This work is to emphasize the constructivist aspect that is inherent in digital production.

wow great read thank you! there's still a lot of concrete music elements in there, i think.
the underlying ideas make the music twice as interesting, and clearer too. i'll try to get hold of that first solo album

Ehler´s music reminds me of various processed field recordings and electroacoustics, as he uses a single sound source.

i dunno.. yesterday as i was listening to plays i virtually saw the victorian upper class people dancing, costumes and all, to the short looped piece of classical music, clouded a bit by the electronic sounds and acoustics, as if the whole thing was being dreamed by some future Romantic mechanoid.
i'm sorry, hehe, i like to visualize music :)
