Why bother?
Like whty bother to strive for doing good ?
Considering there might be nothing after this life, and when
it seems to be a constant struggle.

why bother to do anything?

Vit C, I am devoting my life to figuering out these types of
answers. Doing a lot of reading lately on meta physics and
religeous writtings, and doing a lot of living, and I am
hard pressed to think or believe that doing good things will
not have some reward (karma- treat other how you would like
to be treated).

you said "Like whty bother to strive for doing good "

Its the delicate balance between good and bad that hold this
world together, its part of the reason all religions exist,
to show a path or guidline that shows good and bad.
(although I am not religeous) What if everyone went around
doing gastly horrible things? I dont think I would like that
very much.

And NO ONE, I repeat NO ONE, has any hard evidence that
there IS something after life, its a FACT that energy can
not dissapear, and thats what we all are, energy, so all
this energy inside our bodies has to go somewhere. I am
keeping hopes in the belief that there is something after
all this. (I dont believe in heaven, or in a god) But I
think that there has to be something.

I strive to be a good person, because even if I become
homeless and on skid row, people look up to people who do
good deeds. Not many people now do good things as in the
past, but I think that is even the more reason to try and
strive to be a "good person". This whole, being mean and
rude = funny additute really makes me sad, what happened to
trying in sociaty.... what happened to ... kindness? It may
be hard to find, but I believe there a lot of people that
fight the good fight and are "good people"

But it really depends on what kind of person you are, even
the most wretched criminals have something good about them.
"Good" to me means, holding doors open for people, giving to
people in need, helping people when ever I can, going out of
my way to help people. It brings hope that scociaty is not
imploding on its self, and that morals still exist, and that
the world is not going to shit.

Not to bother, is giving up, quiting at life.

This is all just my

This is all just my thoughts, I dont mean to preach, but I
feel strongly about this type of discussion.

it feels good to help others. for me nobody is truly
separate. the karma to me just means that if i hurt
somebody, i am hurting a part of myself, and if i help
somebody, i help myself. and that's real, because the way
in which i relate with others reflects how i feel, my
spiritual state, and the way i feel reflects how i relate to
others, like a cycle. we're all in this together, plain and
simple.

that energy-thing was really good. thanks, mickey.

i like to think about this kind of things as 'well, if there
_was_ an afterlife, whose side would you like to be on?'. i
try to be good because it makes me happy, and in the same
time i can be even a bit more sure that at least i will not
burn in any agony.

offline jupitah from Minneapolis (United States) on 2002-12-22 12:49 [#00488058]

mickey, you're right that one of the purposes of religions
is to guide moral behavior, but i think it fails. as soon
as you begin to rely on a book or a preacher to inform how
you shouls behave, there is trouble. you only need to feel.
that's how all religions began, with people feeling,
deeply.

well Mickey, you'll be dead before you find any answers.

"..and thats what we all are, energy, so all this energy
inside our bodies has to go somewhere.."

it does go somewhere. it goes into the ground, or
gets burned up. when it goes into the ground it reenters the
cycle of nature.

qter, either that energy is you and you become everything,
or if that energy is not you, you have a soul. am i missing
any possibilities?

offline Mickey Mouse from The Moon on 2002-12-22 13:06 [#00488078]

thats a rather morbid way of looking at it qrter, but if
thats what you believe its your right to think that way.

I hope that if I put enough effort to find some answers or
truth I will get something good enough to satisfy me before
my death.

I really dont want this thread to go the religion bashing
route, if a person is religeous its their right to believe
it, and we should respect their belief.

Re-entering the cycle of nature, that is a good way of
putting it. I have been interviewing some elderly people now
for the past couple of years, hearing out what they have to
say about life. One elderly woman put death in that same
context.

I would like to think that it is reaching a new level of
existance, something so complex and great we will never
really understand or comprehend it.

The great thing about this type of discussion is

No one can be right or wrong about this, to try and say
otherwise is silly, because there is NO evidence that any
one answer is wrong.

And I think it IS possible to find out these answers, maybe
not all of them, but some, in one life time.

Being good makes me feel good and healthy, and I think it
holds the world in balence. The good vs. bad has been
written about in plays, movies, books through out time.
Something significant about that I think.

"I strive to be a good person, because even if I become
homeless and on skid row, people look up to people who do
good deeds."
I'm not saying I'm persect, ah but the thing is I fell like
I rty to do good and all that happens is god slaps me in the
face for it. I've always been interested and yes I do
believe in karma reallly I suppose. However from where I'm
standing the sowing reaps very few rewards. And so saying
all this the idea of being ghastly all the time to other
people sounds like an appealing optionbut I'm probably not
going to .. Oh just don't get me started

hard, and challenge myself than sit around cussing people
out, watching movies, and getting fat.

MAybe you're sowing for the wrong reasons

Like if a farmer goes out and scatters seed to make a huge
profit, and become the most accomplished farmer, and
successful, if it doesn't happen, he's going to be
disappointed and depressed. But if he does it cause he just
wants to make enough food to live off of, and enough money
to break even, chances are he'll be a lot more pleased with
the simple things in life.

And he won't feel so smited if he doesn't make it big.

And so maybe you should just do what you do with a heart
that says "I'm doing this for no glory". Humility solves
many things.

I could pay for the shipping and send it back to you
BlatantEcho. That book sounds really interesting. Being more
then half Shawnee and a tribe member, I like reading books
by other indians. Your emails non public, but you could
email me and we could talk about it more.

Yes, being yourself and trying is what counts I think.

Or as ODB says....... keepin it real

I think its folly too to try to find out what the meaning of
life is.

and I too believe there is no meaning. we're in it, we have
to deal with it. no bigger plan. make your own plans.

i think I'd like to think there is a goal, or a plateu to
reach.

Be happy?

Be comfortable?

Make life what you can?

Do the best you can?

Iono, I don't like those, I prefer:
-----------------------------------

Do everything you can for everyone you know, let the of the
puzzle themselves fall into place.
-----------------------------------

I think that makes the meaning of life more along the lines
of "Watch out for everyone else, and people will watch out
for you"

or more simply "Happiness and Good done promote Happiness
and Good had"

being "good" is better than being "bad" because it serves
the better of the community. everyones better off just
being nice and helpful/kind. if we went around screwing our
friends and beating people up for no reason no on ewould
benifit in the end. this is explained better by some
philospher, cant remember now lol but i can look it up in my
