I had the same problem yesterday and downloaded this:
http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
I run OS 9.2.2 and a 233MHz iMac so maybe that's why it had such a shit frame-rate...

I use VideoLAN Client (vlc), but I find that using DivX Validator for OSX makes them playable in Quicktime. Unfortunetely, the audio track sometimes doesn't work.

xlr > if the audio doesn't work you have to convert the .avi in .mov... with Junktion's app it works
