Boards of Canada questions.

Regarding their last two albums....how much of the stuff is
sampled from other sources, and how much was freshly made by
them, out of pure interest?

And, what are the meanings and themes behing their albums?
Nostalgia, childhood? (that's what I gather)

Thanks.

not that you shouldn't, but i never really think about the
music in those terms. interviews suggest to me that their
music is not meant to push any specific message.

True...but I'm always interested in what artists themselves
think their album's are about.

Well, as far as I know, their samples are primarily voice.
Children laughing, Leslie Neilson in Dandelion, etc. I
believe they make almost all of their sounds (heavily
processed, of course, for that signature BoC feel).

Regarding themes: My own interpretations, combined with
some other opinions, break their two main albums into
separate themes.

Music has the right to children: This is a
predominantely "happy" sounding disc. It's evokes childhood
feelings, innocence, wonder of nature. I think this album
is more of a light-hearted musical journey. It has a very
organic sound, and there may be some influences from native
american music. Many of the songs sound like children's
shows about discovery and exploration of the world around
you.

Geogaddi: This album has a much darker feel. I think
it represents a feeling of paranoia and distrust in nature,
perhaps even an "evil" quality to the earth, sans man. It's
very similar to MHTRTC, but there's an uneasiness. The
samples are much harder to decipher in the tracks on
Geogaddi, and many are reversed. Listen to A is to B as
B is to C
backwards for an example. It adds to the
fear; the hidden message business. People have also heard
some downright disturbing sounds on some of the tracks when
played backwards at low speed, like people screaming on
You could Feel the Sky.

Someone once mentioned that MHTRTC is like a nice dream,
while Geogaddi is like a nightmare.

Thanks....

I've gotta try plaing A is to B as B is to C backwards...

yea in those articles it talks about the national film board
of canada link and that they lived in alberta for a while in
the late 70s
i'd urge everyone to try to get ahold of some of the 70s nfb
material, a lot of it was really really good (and it will
help you understand bocs music more)
as for the mhtrc/geogaddi drea/nightmare thing, I certainly
think that holds some ground
note the negative colour schemes of each of the albums as
well
mhtrtc feels like, you cant quite see whats there, but you
are comfortable that its fine
geogaddi brings the same feeling but without the sense of
comfort

BOC albums are funny, as what you think they sampled is
actually made by them (the prelude to "Everything You Do Is
A Balloon" for example sounds heavily sampled, like it was
from an old recording, but Mike did that himself.

In regards to your original question, on MHTRTC the two most
obvious samples that come to mind is "The Color Of The Fire"
- the girl's voice is from a Sesame Street episode, and BOC
provided the heavy echo and eerie music. "One Very Important
Thought" was originally taken from an adult film BOC samples
quite a bit in their early work, and again they provided the
musical accompanyment. For MHTRTC they changed the words
'adult film' to 'Boards Of Canada'. The original version can
be found on a BOC demo tape called BOC Maxima which is not
publically available ;O]

Geogaddi uses quite a few samples, and DavidAC's page has
tons of references for Geogaddi there. It's an excellent
site.
