Listening to your own music....

Personally I find it very hard to listen to my own music
that I havr made. I'm not sure if you guys do, but when I
listen to it, I always think "Nah, I shouldn't have added
that in there", or "I should've ended it like this, not like
that."

Apparently, authors have the same problem reading their own
books. I bet RDJ can just listen to I Care Because You Do
all the way through comfortably.

Any of you feel the same way?

A+

I enjoy my own stuff, yeah.. I do see it in a different way
- you have all the music of the world, thats outside of my
head, as it were and then there is my music, which comes
from within my head.. makes a big difference..

I listen to everything I make quite a lot. I probably listen
to my shit more than anyone elses.

I mean, it soudns pretentious or whatever, but hey - that's
what I make it for.
Coz I know what I like so I make what I want to hear :)

How can you not like listening to your own music? That is
mental.

If you don't like listening your own music then you aren't
making your own music. Most of the music I make I only make
to listen to myself.

Don't get me wrong, I love some of my stuff, it's just
sometimes I'm a little critical about certain parts of it,
like the abrupt ending that shouldn't have been so abrupt,
etc...

I like to listen to my music, in fact i love to, the thing
it's that allways, i'm thinking: i should put this, turn
that off, modify that, etc. i can't control myself, its like
i want to change everything or anything, make stupid volume
or parameter changes all the time, but anyway people wont
listen to the changes so its useless... I love my music but
i'm not happy with it.

I make music I personally like, so I love listening to my
own tracks.

I hate having OTHER people listening to my music though!
Hence I keep it for myself and very few other people.

Yeah I get other people to listen to my stuff but it really
urts when people rip up your songs and say they're shit,
ouch!
haha
You get used to it a bit though

heh.. im listening to my music whilst reading this thread
actually.. so i guess that answers your question

but it seems the older songs get the less i like to listen
to them.. there are some that stick though

I don't mind that much when people dislike my music.. as
long as they don't just say "IT SUX!!" as that 'sux', or is
just kind of irritating.

that said, its very exciting to let people hear your stuff..
:)

Yeah but I'm pretty thin skinned, and sometimes when ppl say
stuff like "man that song is totally cheesy haha" I'm kinda
like
"aw fuck it wasn't meant to be like that"
Also you gotta watch out, coz when ppl say nice shit about
yr muisic, sometimes you get used to hearing nice stuff so
when you hear something bad said about yr music it hurts
worse than normal, which sucks.
Haha it's called ego :)

i like when people say

hey that sounds like a Mario video game song.

just cuz it doesn't have battle rhyme and a huge beat
doesn't mean it's cheese :(

I liek to listen to my music...in the way I like to listen
to a Good song that I've listened 50 times in teh last 2
days...
Another things that my music fails to do is surprise me,
sicne I know every part of it...

I often focus on taking stuff too far. I'll take something
(a wav of a beat or melody I made etc) and do something else
to it. But later when I listen to all the old wavs for fun,
the original unaltered ones are often better, relatively of
course since they ALL suck.

for me, its a vicious cycle

when i first finish a track (and I only finish tracks I am
happy with. ie finished=make into an mp3) ill listen to it
nonstop. And im excited and proud.

But then within a day or two, i notice things i dont like

then there will be a point where i just think, oh god, i
suck so bad. i should give up. and i seriously get so
fucking depressed.

But then ill listen to it again, and be like, no, i like
it.

But basically... its how you grow... finding what you did or
didnt like, and try to improve on your next track.

I try not to take myself too seriou8sly (it's hard, sometime
sI get oo seriuos and have to back up a bit) and not
overanalyze my own stuff.

I think making music should be fun, when you start gettin'
stressed out over it and tearing your hair out, then it's
not fun and I step back and work on somethign else or laugh
at how dorky I am worrying over a song that's not even gonn
be released or anything, haha od you dork :)

some extent - makes your work better, or well, the chance of
it becoming good.. :)
