Ever played live?

Hi!

I was wondering who of you ever played a live set... (I mean
playing live with your own music)
I'm planning to do some live music beginning of 2003 and
maybe you could give me some tips?

I had a pretty good time, actually. It was a small party
(maybe 30 people) for one of my good friends. He asked if
I'd play.

I just set up and played through a couple of p.a. speakers.
No one seemed to dislike it, so I guess it went over
alright.

What kind of music did you do?

played alot. its a total rush and alot of fun to hear your
own stuff that loud on the PA.

tips...

it all depends. are you using hardware? computers?

make sure you are prepared. have all your cables. patches
set up. midi configured right.

try to get a sound check. all PA's are different and all
sound board operators are as well. its best to test your
stuff before the crowd gets there.

get drunk before you start. ;)

try to interact with the crowd. they like that. :)

try not to go for more than 45 mins. anything more and
unless youre really rocking the crowd, can get to be a bit
much.

um, i have more tips but i need more info about your setup
first.

For the first half, when everyone was there, I did a lot of
loud, beat-oriented stuff. When a few folks left and the
others sat back and began to chat, I just played more low
key, background stuff. That part was fun too. It's cool to
create a mood.

ive played live.

many times on drums, many times on bass, and a few times
with my electronic music.

The drums was like, rock, latin, reaggee kinda stuff.

With bass, its been jazz, funk, rock kinda stuff.

As far as my own electronic stuff... welllll

ive played "live" 3 times... but i didnt really do
anything.

The first time was at a school event, a big festival we had
every year. Basically it consisted of my pressing play and
nodding my head.

I then realized that sucked.

So the other 2 times, i tried to make it more hands on...
triggering off effects.

But it still was pretty boring.

Im looking into doing live improv kinda sets on a laptop
when i buy one. much more hands on, and interactive.

Setup:
analogue mixer
superbassstation/korg prophecy/RolandMKS50/pc soundcard
PC (soon to be laptop) running cakewalk 9
Midi is allright. I even have spare cables etc...
Done a lot of live-mixing without any audience but I'm just
curious if there is more to know...

You should check out Cakewalk Sonar XL. I thought version 9
sucked eXXXtreme ass.

And hey it's the same price *wink*

I've played live lots.. it's the funnest thing in the
world.

Nothing can compare to the feeling of seeing someone that
you don't know 'feeling' your music...

Here's the thread where i posted a link to my latest
live performance...

My advice.. be prepared. Choking in front of a crowd
is not cool at all..

That's my biggest fear, not the live set, but losing contact
with my music because of the nerves...
'm planning to play live for some friend first in my own
house...

what do you mean by choking? did you choke?

and yeah, it is a weird feeling when people "feel" your
music.

thats why I like to share my music online, cause i get the
most interesting feedback about my songs... the descriptions
Ive gotten... :)

Take Portland's advice and drink (seriously). I wouldn't get
stoned your first time, and for gods sake dont eat acid..

but yeah, tie a couple on before you go on...

About cakewalk vs Sonar:
1st:
I like cakewalk's interface better, because its very easy to
select and mute/solo groups of tracks. I cakewalk very
intensively when I record live mixes at home.
2nd:
Sonar doesnt run well on my PC. I have a p2 350MHz. Sonar
requires 400 MHz minimum I thought?

I'm just sticking to cakewalk 9 :)

I played a three minute set at the church talent show with a
friend. we just hooked our two laptops up to the mixer and
speakers. it was funny playing to all these people with
such a diverse age range.. they must have been like 'what
the...' . haha it was great. the song, well, eh, not so
great..

what do you mean by choking? did you choke?

choking = fucking up

example: pressing the wrong key and everything just stops
all of the sudden and everyone looks at you like, "wtf?"

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-12-03 14:40 [#00466801]

yeah, i knew it meant fucking up...

just wanted to know specifically... ie. hitting a button
that makes everything stop. thats pretty bad. at least if
its just an unwanted sound, you take it off real quick, but
at least the music is still goin... complete silence wouldnt
be cool

actually, the 2nd set i did, something got fucked up, and so
all the patches got rerouted, so none of the sounds i wanted
were playing... i was like holy shit, and freaked out. but I
didnt let it show.

but afterwards i talked to people and they were like "that
was so cool!" they had no idea! heheh

if youre using midi gear. make sure to test it before you go
on.

if you can jam at home then do that on stage. its the same
thing.

ive only been intimidated (spelling?) by an audience twice.
my first time, and once when i played on a radio show. the
second only because i had no idea who was out there
listening. ;)

if youre playing to a good crowd, read them and adjust your
tunes accordingly. if they are jumpin up and down, keep them
goin. if they are all stoned and zoned keep it more low key.

just relax and realize that this is a very special thing
youre doing. not everyone gets the oppotunity to showcase
their music live, loud and to a crowd. :)

:)
Guess its more a matter of self-confidence rather than the
stability of my gear etc...
I've been on a lot of dancefloors during parties and
live-sets of other artists, so I know what's happening on
the floor.
Hope it goes well.

If you're DJing never break the 4 hour rule- don't play the
same record in its entireity twice within 4 hours. Unless
you've got a very long set it shouldn't be an issue, but if
you can listen to the DJ(s) before you and make sure you
don't play the same record. I've been in a club where one DJ
started his set with the previous dj's second to last
record. The crowd started booing and laughing and walked
off.

I been at a party watching a live performance of approx 2
hours +.
And like one hour after the perfomance, I swear they were
playing the dat recording of the live-set back.

It felt really weird being on the floor at that time.

ive played about 6 times. i usually hook up with a mate of
mine "device driver" and we bassically take it in turns at
playing traks.

he uses reason, and manipulates stuff on the fly using his
mouse.

i use fruityloops and a few synths allong with a 12 knob
midi controller.

we both run through my mixing desk, and a few outboard fx.

been doing ok so far, i think we spin people out more than
anything. theres not really much of a scene around here, so
when people see you manipulating stuff live there like. what
the fuck?

ive also been told our shit is hard to dance too, so.....

if i ever feel like playing live, i have a plan, i'm going
to preselect about 50 or so mp3s, pitchshift them so that
they're all the same tempo, hook some speakers up to a
laptop, get 2 mp3 players going and just have some fun.
