Hi, I really want to start to make some IDM music and don't have a clue how to get started. I'm sure lot's of peple here can set me on the right path so what do I need software wise (etc?)? Do you self teach yourself or are their tutorials and stuff? The sort of music I'd like to make is more mind **** rather than slow and melodic if that helps too. Can you add your own noises to the programs and manipulate them and stuff? Any help would be greatly appreciated, i got lots of idea's and I want to get creative with music! Cheers

now, lots of people'll say, start with Fruity Loops.. you don't want to do that.. start with SoundForge.. you can put samples in there and manipulate them. start out by just making good sounds, don't worry about "track structures" or anything, that'll come later.

I think 6.0 is the last edition that came out. you can use all kinds of plugins (the programs that make the effects) in there too (although you can also do this in Fruity Loops), but I wouldn't worry about that for now.

Soundforge 5.0 is my favourite audio-tool, but i'd reckon it is fairly complicated for a beginner. or maybe i'm just stupid.

Dreamstation is good too. it's a tracker, mainly for making melodies and stuff...but you can tweak the ass off those presets!

I started out with SF and Cubase 5.1.. well, that meant mostly messing around with SF and being scared of Cubase..
soundforge isn't that hard. it can be as complex as you want it to get.
SF is my favourite audioprogramme, YEAH!

and because it isn't that much into sequencing as FL is, I think its a better, more free start. it just focuses on sound. most important thing imo is making good sounds first, structure later..

The best thing to use is Cubase VST without a doubt. I'm not to sure how you'd create music with Soundforge but I'd like to be shown. But Cubase VST is perfect for making music it is the most user friendly program I've ever used. Once you've got a copy of VST then you can download loads of free VST Instruments (samplers, synthezisers, drum machines etc) plugins off the internet. I would say its best just to start using purely software because you can do really anything you want now with software and a good imagination and then take it from there.

i just have finished my first album with my friend using only fruity, few plugins, cool edit pro (thanks syntrilium for making the best audio-edit program)
and my microphone. and btw, we started with mixing the fruity tutorial songs...
try to get used to all functions, after it, try experimenting with everything, and save everything. the time will come and you will make good songs from skratch...

In addicion to soundforge you might consider using Acid (also by sonicfoundry I believe).
Its not the tool but the artist creating the sound. most of the time, allthough you DO need some good tools.
Try several programs like cubase, logic, sonar, acid, soundforge. Just clown around with em for a while and as time goes by you find yourself suddenly using just one or two programs, which suit you the best.
at least, that's the way it worked for me. I started out using cubase and cakewalk, and I stuck to cakewalk.
For audio I used cooledit and soundforge. And I kept using em both because they both have nice features.
It's maybe lame to say, but you gotta find your own way in this in order to find your own sound.
Prepare for some tough years! ; )
