Toejam - truth is i got real sick and couldnt have my 4
wizdumd teef removed this tues so i gotta get it done nex'
week which means ill be fucked up and shitty on sunday. i
wont be well enough to do much of anything.
haha youre a champ, mate thanks a lot :)

Vit C - thanx a load man! uhh I use fruityloops and I try
real hard that's about it. i dont have the song on me (im
stoned at a friends house atm, haha) so i can't give yuo any
sort of insight into the song, i know i used a lot of
drumsynth generated sounds in it (get drumsynth you can make
awesome noises with it) and i figgered out the mian strings
riff on my sister's shitty keyboard she lets me keep in my
room when i was waiting for a turn on the net.

haha thanks guys, you rock :):)

i have mroe trax at www.mp3.com.au/orangedust
if you want.

erg! you make me jealous. You have a much better
understanding than I of how melodies are supposed to go
together in order to sound good. Songs like these are just
perfect as far as pure aesthetic value goes (as opposed to
doing fancy tricks for the sake of being fancy- but you
still DO fancy tricks only in ways that add to the aesthetic
whole). They're so videogamey.

hey thanx guys!

w M w - dude it's a widely known fact that I have very
little idea what's actually going on, most of it is
guesswork and the rest is basic notes knowledge (ie avoid
putting stuff together that is a semitone apart etc).
Thanks!

Mickey - I think I know the bit you're referrign to I wanted
to use that mroe! But in order to put it in the playlist
would have to have gotten a fair bit longer (sometimes you
can't just tack these things in anywhere, y'know?) and the
track was a bit too long already :)

"avoid putting stuff together that is a semitone apart"

something simple like this could be really helpful to me...
more insight... johnny 5 need input... inpuuuut... mmmm.. I
wish I could just stick a q-tip in YOUR BRAIN and wipe out
all that SEXY music insight and then EAT IT... mmmm, yummy.
*turns into a zombie

offline od_step_cloak from Pleth (Australia) on 2002-12-01 21:27 [#00463955]
Points: 3803 Status: Regular

Um justr stuff I figgered out.
Notes that are a semitone apart often sound out fo tune.
Uhh what else, obviously a note that is an octave higher
than anotghe note will always be in tune (ie c5 and c6 are
in tune)
just real simple stuff I think, and I probably sound way
patronizing, I'm sorry hehe :)
Umm what else, I sort of have this notes structure thign in
my head.

NOTE IS IN TUNE WITH
C E, F, G, G#, A
C# F, F#, G, G%
D F, G, G#
D# G, G#, A#, C
E C, G, G#, A#
F C, A#, D, A, C#
F# C#, C, D....
G C, D, D#, E
G# C, D, D#, F
A F, C, E
A# F, D#, D
B Not much realy...

This is a real rough thing off the top of my head, but you
can muck around with it if you want. Just make sure all the
notes lpaying at one time are in tune with each other.

offline w M w from London (United Kingdom) on 2002-12-01 21:37 [#00463959]
Points: 21459 Status: Lurker

my lame usual way to make a melody is to make a single
melody (no polyphony- just one) then I make EVERYTHING
(percussion, notes, everything) follow that one melody. The
only way I've really gotten multiple melodies to sound good
together is by using a round of that same melody, maybe a
few keys higher or something. Or another thing I did was to
make one melody, then merely accentuate a note here and
there by including a note along with it of a lower octave.
your way allows much more freedom. my way is too rigid. I'll
try this thanks.

... that poor little b note *sniff

offline od_step_cloak from Pleth (Australia) on 2002-12-01 22:16 [#00463973]
Points: 3803 Status: Regular

I do use the B note a bit but there's no real "set" pattern
to it, just use it sometimes when I'm fuckign around seeing
what notes fit where.
But yeah, poor B :(

PS all black keys are in tune w/ each other, that's a nice
one to use sometimes

it depends what key you are in.

all sorts of combinations can sound great.

i dont know if you know this, but here it goes:

establish your key. what note is the tonic, and is the key
major or minor.

major= whole step from tonic, whole step from previous, half
step from previous, whole step (etc), whole, whole, half
step (takes you back to the tonic)

minor= whole step, half step, whole, whole, half, whole,
whole.

to make chords in that key... take a note. then, take every
other note.

example. in key of C major. making a chord on C... it would
be C, E, G, B. (every other note)

in the key of C major again, but a D chord... it would be D
F A C.

make sense?

hope that gave some fundamentals to work with :D

again, sorry if you guys knew this...

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-12-01 23:22 [#00464021]

*half step is they key right next to it, whole step is the
key 2 half steps away.

so C, to C# is a half step.

C to D is a whole step

Zeus - haha I sort of know notes, but on a very weird level.
The kind of level you learn it on when you actually don't
now anything, but have taught yourself a bunch of crap.

Yeah, like I'm on that level.
For real.

And I'm real dumb.

haha! i can do the hair
but ive quite smokin :)

i could play a set. of like solo stuff. but i dont know if
that would go down too well. mind ive never played without
ronny before.

were not ready to play together at the moment, either, its
been so long since the last jam

makes me wonder how chrism+fenris do it. they say they dont
rehearse :)

and also, you know theyll probably end up needing that extra
40 mins to keep the night running smoothly - looks like a
lot of acts are up
