When i use the term IDM i do so so with regret as i wish it would just fuck off. But i guess the question applies for musicians of all types who may be at the top of their game but not at all known in general.
I suppose it comes down to unit sales and whether appearing live or dj, what maybe a couple or three, times a month will cover the bills.
I'd love to know. Do you reckon most warp and rephlex artists have "everyday" jobs to support their music making - to buy new equipment and to pay the bills? Or can they get away with not working?
I've no idea about record sales for these artists might be. I'm know that the likes of AT+SP are out of this equation, but for the lesser known how many do you reckon they sell? As an example let's take Bogdan Raczynski.
He's had quite a few releases in his time and i'm going to hazard a guess that he's sold a grand total of 50,000 units (god that took some thought :) of all formats. So, supposing he gets what, about one pound from all of those he's earned £50,000 from sales. Is that enough over the last five or so years to warrant no further income? How many guest appearances does the man do? Not too many really.
I read in an inteview that the snaresman said he had a few other "bits and pieces" aside from music that helps keep things rolling. Be good to know what i reckon!! Window cleaner perhaps! Twenty quid says it's McDonalds. No, no... gynocologist

most of them work besides making music.
the market for this kind of music is tiny, the production is enormous.

I think aphex twin and squarepusher dont have other jobs... in a plaid interview they said that they are living off their releases and doing just music now.
Other then that, I dont think there are many other "IDM" people that can make a living off of their productions

I guess if you love making music you're going to do it regardless of how many records you sell.
But imagine if you're some guy, sitting behind a computer, making amazing tracks, with an army of fans, but when you go into work, you're just another one of the drones in the eyes of your manager. Hard to imagine, but it must be true in some cases.

I could live with being a drone in the eyes of my boss. (which is the truth at the moment).
And have another 'secret identity'.
Working on that last bit though. I'm now in the demo phase. so I hope there will come a time when I get something on vinyl or CD.
For now its just online mp3's. C738-music

I know what you mean- it seems "wrong" to just do music making as a job... If I were in the position where I could make enough money doing music, I'd still do some "real work" on the side. Ideally I'd like to be a DB consultant and work when I wanted to fit around music making etc.

90% of those tracks are 'live home recordings'. That fade away track was based on a midi project of 1 bar (2 second loop).
I am too lazy to arrange things to a complete track. Just loops and doing stuff on mixer and tweaking the filters.

DUDE! I said I'd never do it for a fucking LIVING! Like I'd take all their fuckin' money, I just would never say "OK that's it, I'm fan-fucking-tastic, so I'm gonna quit my day job and rely on making music for a job"
In my opinion this would be a dumb thing for me to do.
Besides, this oppourtunity aint never gonna happen so who cares, B?

"Interviews pay's too sometimes doesn't it?" dont think so?
pay for remixes varies widely - from a few hundred quid for most producers to 10's of thousands for big boys.
bogdan sales - i dunno, but 50,000 sounds like a hell of a lot! how many albums has he released? he probably sold about 5000 for his rephlex albums, smaller labels than rephlex would probably be much less
