If anyone suggests you get a Mac or use Linux be sure to
punch them in the face as hard as possible and as many times
as possible. I think something is accessing your drive. Make
sure no programs are running especially Virus scanners
(including the one in the BIOS) before running the scanner.
If that don't work? *shrugs *

just think of something... exchange it with a computer of
someone who's blind or so..
hm.. of course they don't have computers

well, then I think I would smash it up

(you must be very pleased with so much serious reactions)

1.try run scandisk before you defragment it...

2. download System Mechanic. excellent prog for deleting
those hard-to-find yet-taking-up-a-lot-of-space-files.

To run a long defragment, do as Spikee says and disable
virus scanners and utilities (Norton is especially bad) and
DISABLE YOUR SCREEN SAVER! Every time it goes on it fucks
with the defragmenting, I've noticed. Power down the monitor
if it's going to take a long time.

Or you could always install Linux or get a Mac... :: ducks

Yes, Spikee speaks wise words- also if you're running XP and
it's not a 7200rpm/scsi hard disk make sure the "feature"
that spends every free microsecond indexing your hard disk
for quicker searches is turned off.

There's your problem. You'll find that computer problems
vary inversely with computer knowledge.

This is true. My dad knows absolutely nothing about
computers and *every* problem he has is unsolvable.

Your problem is probably a combination of things slowing it
down. I apologise if any of this sounds patronising, but
here goes:

First, do what Spikee says and make sure no other programs
are running before running scandisk (or chkdsk or whatever
the xp equivalent is now called if you're running Windows
XP): Boot up the machine, wait until it's stopped paddying
about with the hard drive, then close any programs that
might have popped up in the system tray (that bit with the
icons bottom right of the desktop, near the clock). If you
can't make the icons go away, it's probably ok to leave
them. Close any other programs that might have started (the
ones with big buttons on the task bar) Then run scandisk.

CeriCJ is also onto a good one with that indexing thing. If
you're using XP turn it off, it's poo. (You can find out how
with Windows help, believe it or not!)

Use the disk cleanup utility (usually accessed via the
Accessories part of your start menu) and clear downloaded
program files, temporary internet files, offline web pages
(unless you have any you want to keep offline - and this is
only web pages you've browsed and bookmarked as being
available offline, not any websites you've tried to knock up
yourself), the recycle bin, temporary files and webclient
temp files. Don't compress old files if you have that
option.

It would be a good idea to make sure that you have enough
room on your C drive for the paging file. You can change how
large the file is or get windows to work it out as it goes
along.

Remove any programs you don't use to free up more space so
that virtual memory paging won't have a problem, or with the
aforementioned paging file settings you can specify a drive
for it that *does* have enough space on it. If things run
slowly it could be because you don't have much free memory
and the virtual memory is struggling within the confines of
a tiny file.

Then run defrag.

If it's still all shit, buy a new hard drive, replace your
current drive with the new one, use the current one as a
secondary drive (so you don't lose all the stuff on it) and
re-install windows and all your software on your new drive.

God, I'm some windbag.
