Amon Tobin and Richard Devine. Though I'm not really into
Devine... his music is very impressive.

mmm yes they have that good trick they do to drums, they
change the beat to a different style of beat over a few bars
of the tune and end up with something totaly different .
thats skill!

I think if aphex really felt like it he could kick anyones
ass when it comes to technicality.

Tho i would say Squarepusher and Autechre have done some
serious audio trickery lately.
Richard Devine sure.

Its hard to say really.

Yea i suppose its a tricky question .
I also think aphex is the master masher but he will have to
keep on his toes to be the best as there are people catching
up to him .
I wish he would realese some of his live stuff on a big
album because some of the tunes ive heard live have blown
all his other albums out of the water!. Ive seen him 5 times
and has never once dissapointed me.

I agree. People are definitely catching up to Mr. James. He
should just go ahead and release his 'too weird' material.
If it's so ahead of it's time, why hold it back?

hmm in regards to technical ability as a musician...i'd say
squarepusher definitely

but when comparing technical ability as far as making
sounds... its really hard to say.. you cant really judge
'ability' when it comes to experimentation... everyone's
doing something different...often with different equipment
and techniques

the obvious choice: richard d. james!

he is, in my opinion, the best at what all these
other idiots [sorry] try to make. don't get me wrong, i
enjoy a lot of different 'idm' artists, but I think richard
will always be the most technically advanced... he's just
brilliant

then probably otto von schirach, michael fakesch, richard
devine, r. d. james. the people making the software are the
real techno wizards.

i bought one last year for like nothing with the allmighty
SQ-10 (sequencer)
since then i can't get my hands out of it... you can just do
everything that comes in your mind with it (except midi)
it's delightfull and it's complete artistic freedom, just
wish it was polyphonic

offline JivverDicker from my house on 2002-11-21 15:43 [#00450870]

I love the hardcore filter! It's sooo harsh, and tasty.
Have you tried any CV gate midi things to control it or do
you edit things after, or leave it as it was recorded?

the cv/midi is a must have, but i'm broke now, so i record
and fuck with it in cooledit, not very convenient...
but yeah the filter man!! WHOAAA
i got a chorus and a flanger pedal, plus a digital echo
(that was a revolution) in an old big samick mixer, i still
miss a reverb and a disto and i go to heaven !

hmm in regards to technical ability as a musician...i'd
say squarepusher definitely

He's certainly the most capable of making music per se... if
you rounded up a bunch of electronic musicians--say, the
whole Warp crew--and handed them acoustic instruments and a
4-track he'd mop the floor with them. He's got chops as they
say.

Given their choice of weapons though Autechre is hard to
beat. Disks like ep7 and Confield have changed the
definition of music and how it can be made... they take
categories like concrete and abstract and utterly invert
them.

richard d james can make an entire track out of an empty
soda can and a carpet from bass drum
i read that somewhere... imagine the tack : very repetitive
with a bizare soda-can solo troughout the song! =)

Tom is fockin special. I'd love to hear him collaborate with
some virtuoso non-electronic musicians like John McLaughlin
or Herbie Hancock.

Dunno if you've ever heard Inner Mounting Flame or Birds of
Fire by McLaughlin, but I can imagine Tom playing bass in
realtime along with them (the bands, not the CDs) and then
feeding the mix through his computer.... o sweet madness
that would be....

I think the best music in the coming years is going to come
from this kind of thing - live music given the electronic
treatment. Some of the most exciting music these days is
coming from treated guitar recordins, like Fennesz and
Zammuto.

Autechre for electronic ability.
Squarepusher for melding live instruments into the mix.
Boc for warping sounds and sheer fucked-up
out-of-tune-in-a-good-way ability.
