Montreal - November 18, 2002 3 p.m.

Today, thethirdball went over to Cheap Thrills and purchased
their only copy of Venetian Snares - Winter in the Belly of
a Snake.

* * *

I'm currently listening to it for the first time. It's out
in the US and Canada - so all you Yanks and Canucks can get
your copy now.

Oh yeah - it's darn good too.

I was hesitant to give it a review, fearing that I would
ruin it for some of you but...

Venetian Snares Review
----------------------------
by thethirdball

Venetian Snares will spend the rest of his career trying to
live up to his seminal Doll Doll Doll. With Winter in the
Belly of a Snake, Mr. Funk may have done it. This is a bit
of a departure - understated at times - but missing none of
the VS attitude. Think of a menage-a-trois with
Shitfuckers, Songs About My Cats and I Care Because You Do
as the principle participants and you're halfway there.

The opening track "Dad" is particularly moving considering
that he singing about his own father - who passed away. But
that's only the beginning - it's sets the mood maintained
throughout this release. That mood is in a word,
melancholic. This album just feels sad - if you can dig
that - you'll love it.

This is really everything I look for in album. It has a
cohesive spirit - and sends shivers up the spine.

Next level shit.

According to WATMM he's selling copies on tour. And he'll
be Montreal December 6th. Why not make the trip?

I don't know Monoid, I think you're missing something - then
again with Snares you either love it or you hate it. As you
can probably guess I love it.

VSnares has an aggressive edge that Squarepusher just can
match. Don't get me wrong I love Squarepusher but his style
is more reserved - for example, he's never produced anything
as raw as "One Eye". VSnares is a distinctive talent as far
as I'm concerned.

god DAMMIT this album rules!

at first, i was kind of like "holy shit, thats nuts" cause
there is so much randomness... but its kinda like confield
to me... you start accept it all.

Now i just think of it as ambeint noise music. its lots of
noise and rythems but without a "groove" so it becomes
somewhat a soundscape

beautiful.

i showed it to my boss.

She kind of liked it. She said its not something she would
buy, or listen to, but she appriciatted it for what it was,
even if she didnt understand it.

She said it sounds like "music by people on acid, for people
on acid" haha.

i must admit this is my first purchase of VS!

people talked about him, and so i went to planetmu.com and
looked for some sound clips, a few months ago, and WITBOAS
was the first clip i heard, and I decided that was the first
one I want to get...
