a lot of the music i record to wav is live spontaneous stuff and i like a lot of it but the volume tends to crazy with sudden ear splitting highs that are not healthy in the slightest. how do i "average" the volume, or bring it down in specific places... from the wav file, not the prog i use to create?

get audacity from www.sharewaremusicmachine.com (i think). it's lets you amplify or de-amplify wavs.
it also can get rid of noise bursts with a noise removal function.
