now, before we start, let me just say one thing. I am a
musician, and have been working on a PC for my entire
production life - and it has had some great times, and some
bad times. When i first decided to switch to a Mac, which
was actually very recent, i was really not sure how to go
about it. I have used my buddy's mac, and a few others - and
i love them - they are so great! So - i just wanna ask -
what do all the MUSICIANs here think of macs, i dont want
some loud mouth like rephlex gettin in here and stating his
opinion (btw, i have been an afx.nu user for a LONG time,
almost a year and a half now) i want some honest opinions
from the creative side of things - and maybe from the
technical side - please, biased opinions wont help me get
anywhere - thnx

They are great for multimedia. They easily can excell PCs
when doing larger things dealing with audio and visual.
thats what they were pretty much made for.

I have been a mac user all my life....

I have three in my house.... but I also use pc's a lot all
the time... I think my opinion is pretty non biased...

so here is what I think:

Macs are incredibly easy to use. The operating system is
great and easy to get around. I am running both OS X and OS
9.xx on various machines. Problem I see is this. You got a
company that is trying to "switch" from one OS to another.
The new operating system is really great. I cant rave about
it enough. But there ARE some down sides to it. Not in the
sense of the programming. But in terms of moving all of your
OS 9 work to your OSX machine. This especially goes if you
are using a lot of app's. For example... a lot of small
software companies are probubly not going to port to the new
os. I am talking shareware and free ware apps here. But a
lot of the major audio programs are being worked on, or
allready ported... Reaktor, Digital Performer, Reason,
MAX/MSP, Super Collider, Peak, Pretty much all Native
Instruments programs... but some will take a while to be
availible. Most new machines now are just OS X. So this
could be a bad thing if you want to have more options. But
the Mac is a great machine to do audio in, especially
dealing with midi in OS X.

I have also done work with pc audio too. And it has some
great things as well. For example.. fruityloops is just for
pc, acid is as well.... and a lot of trackers of available.
Trackers are not available on macs just yet. Also... its a
lot easier to code on a pc... so you have more audio
applications being developed for it... and slightly more vst
plug-ins. Handling MIDI on a pc can kindoff be a pain... but
you get used to it. A lot of little things (that I find most
important) like those wierd shareware or freeware apps youll
find a lot more on the pc. And you will definatly have more
of a selection as far as choosing app's.

Macs are going to be getting more and more people coding on
it, due to the unix core.. so this might mean more programs.
I know that a lot of people

offline Mickey Mouse from The Moon on 2002-11-14 15:20 [#00442247]
Points: 4130 Status: Addict

..... are making vst - plugins for mac now... and there are
some app's like MAX/MSP and super collider that are just for
mac.

But just because you have a mac is not going to mean your
going to be making your tracks better, or that youll have
amazing super dsp powers... it will maybe make it easier for
you to do that.. but if anything.. you might be a little
limited as far as application availability. You can produce
good quality music on a pc and on a mac. It just all has to
do with personal preference.

But in the end I would choose a mac

... this is all just my opion....

Diehard mac user here. All i know is that it's a great
platform for doing graphics & video work, which is what I
do. I know you're interested in audio, so I'll let the
others speak their sentiments. Everything I've heard from
people who use macs for audio say they are far superior,
just because of the programs available and the easier setup
of components and I/O.

now, i was wondering - what model Mac would be the best to
suit my needs? musician, need a desktop computer - am really
looking towards getting a G4 tower - but dont exactly have
the cash for it - any suggestions?

yeah thats the Power Mac G4 - dual 1ghz processors with
SuperDrive - amazing machine :D

Indeed! I love my 867 G4 w/super drive. If you are getting a
desktop like the G4 tower...

make sure you dont want to take it anywhere.... because
toting around a G4 to a live set is VERY bad.

I cant believe the power books are up to 1 ghz!

Yes..... me too. If you go to a school, and buy directly
from the apple site... you can get a student discount. And
that helps out a bit..... also try macmall... they have good
deals on hardware and throw in a lot of free RAM

i love my macs but i think the only thing i don't like about
them is that they'll never be like pcs in that you couldn't
really build your own or repair one that easily... you know,
kinda like, if the worm turns tomorrow and my imac breaks
down, what the fuck am i gonna do? use my pc i suppose :(

they're a brand too, but a brand like the virgin cinema
special screens where everything is done for you
(snacks+drinks served etc.) and you have a real hard time
feeling guilty about it :)

corticalstim, if you're going to do a lot of audio work, and
you're not going through USB interface, you'll probably need
a G4 tower. You can get a used or discontinued model that's
just as capable as the brand new ones for less money, i have
a 466mHz G4 tower from 2001, and it's still incredibly
powerful.

If you're not going to install any audio interface boards,
or just going through USB audio, you can get by with an
iMac. The new ones use a G4 processor.

alls i can say, is get the fastest, best computor possible.

for audio, and for lifespan.

im currently saving for a powerbook, which will suit my
needs fine, esp since I want to perform live, and i need
portability for school (I do music, and I need to be able to
take my powerbook around with me to plug into the synth
stations)

but if portability isnt an issue, get the best tower you can
afford.

i cant stress that enough.

*didnt mean to downplay the powerbooks. they are amazing,
and will suit your needs for music, but towers are generally
better, in that you can have more disk space (i have to buy
a firewire hard drive)

I was chatting to Michael Law (veteran electronic artist)
about this a week or so ago. It's his opinion that Macs are
infinitley better for music production (in his studio there
are 6 macs, 1 PC). I would say that if I was playing live
I'd have to go with a mac. PCs (mine especially) are just
too unstable. Mind you for studio work, PCs have the
advantage of more software and P2P networks (IE free music
software) for amateurs...

I've done a internship at a Larger Audio house that does
sound for feature films and now I work at a studio that does
sound for TV and commercials and they both use Macs. I own
a PC myself and its crapped out on me too many times. The
next computer I buy will be Mac forsure!!!!
