which films do you rate as the best purely visually?

I think anything Kubrick falls in that category. I'm always
amazed to see his stuff, how gorgeous it looks.

also, Terry Gilliam. wonderful sets.

and Peter Greenaway. he uses beautiful and striking images.

oh yeah Lynch..

how about the beginning of "Blue Velvet".. going down into
the earth to the crawling insects..

also, I'd say "Alien" - the 1st one.

That's a great scene. Lost Highway isn't my favorite of his,
but I will always remember the excellent use of darkness and
shadow.

yeah.. Lynch also has a great ear for sound.. he always uses
his soundtrack to maximum effect (as does Kubrick I might
add).. all the shots in the house - theres always this kind
of ominous hum..

The Coppola version. I haven't seen it in years, so maybe
it's not as good as I think? I'm just a sucker for anything
remotely gothic, anything with castles and graveyards.

I don't understand the question.

Do you mean cinemotography wise?

Just location?

Shot placement in a beautiful location? Lots of movies take
advantage of shit location with great visual shots.

Lots of movies can build a huge fucking shot and have a
static shot that is breathtaking as well.

Sorry to make waves. Maybe I should just shut up.

whatever seems the best definition to you.

as long as it is gripping visually. mm, I guess that quickly
comes down to shot placement etc.

I saw charlie chaplins "modern times" last week, on a big
screen, with a full orchestra playing the intended score.

it was amazing. also visually, I mean. the sets he used, the
special effects.

IT WAS!

it was completely and utterly wonderful.. I was sitting in
the front row and there you had like 40 people working
themselves into a sweat for the largest part of 90 minutes..
:)

they do whole series of them, every year.. they've done
"Goldrush", "Potemkin" etc.. this was the first one I saw,
as I always have to work on the nights they do this.. :(

Ok, this is stupid, but I'll reasons:

I like the shots in the movie Gettysburg: especially during
Picket's charge.

The shot of the boys lined up, crossing Emitsberg (sp?).

The shot is all shaky, cuz it was done with a remote control
helicopter, they couldn't do any better.

But that shot, at the actual location, with really, 5,000+
real historical actors, I think it was the most beautiful
shot I have seen in a long time.

I appreciate it technically, historicall, emotionally and
what not, so it gets my vote.

Man, one of 2 DVDs I own, need to throw it on right
now......

omfg, that honestly sounds like one of those things that
defines your life in a totally uncomprehensible way

I am very jealous, sounds like you appreciated it though,
hope everyone in the audience did as well

Saw a restored *as much as they can* reel of Metropolis.
Man o man, with the original score it was great.

With a live orchestra? oh fuck, i can't even imagine

it was a lot to take in, and it was only like 5/6 of all the
film, the rest is just gone.

The restored score was very very nice.

I still love my Gettysburg shot though......the joys of
cinema

My votes go to Alien, Legend (good old Ridley Scott :),
Solaris (Tarkovsky original), The City of Lost Children and
Delicatessen.
Tim Burton's films do look good, but something about them
visually doesn't sit quite right with me. :/

The Thin Red Line - that is a good one, they shot like 6
million feet of film for that. and used obviously, much
less

I dunno what some of you mean by the Matrix though, the
special effects were good, but visually, most of that shit
was CG and just some camera guy shooting a green screen.
Hardly visual at all.

How come no one is giving reason? Lets hear why, if it
sounds interesting enough, I'm going to go rent me some
movies!
