Drum n' Bass

offline martinhm from York (United Kingdom) on 2002-11-12 06:46 [#00438383]

I've not really listened to a lot of what the drum n' bass
scene has produced, but I was watching MTV and saw Shy FX.
These guys seem to be quite well respected in the
scene, but their music stinks.

'Shake your body' was drum n' bass by numbers with a crappy
female vocal, and their new one is a carbon copy of it, only
with more horns thrown in.

Seriously, I hope drum n' bass has better to offer than
this. I don't see why these guys aren't a laughing stock.

Shy FX used to have style back in '94 when he was making
Jungle, what you heard was pop dude. You need to dig a
little.

I wouldn't rely too much on MTV for quality music...

This is true. I was not aware of Shy FX's old stuff. Now
he/they seem to be all over TOTP and the charts.

Made me shudder. I want original nutter not sex in the city
gank.

I'm sure someone can recommend some drum n bass to try on
but I'm not the best to ask by far.

Photek - Modus Operandi is pretty much the high water mark
of DnB. I've heard that Solaris sucks though...

Any good? I understand it's very clubby with diva vocals and
stuff, not at all like his other stuff.

Prresley, you have to hit refresh. Otherwise your browser
shows whatever's in the cache.

Of course it's always possible that you have a disorder that
causes you to see defecating birds everywhere.

Well I like a few tracks on it. Yeah it's clubby, like he
just done a bit of a pop album. One track starts with a
voice looping yeah gently and turns into some great drum n
bass but nothing spectacular. The album seems to stay on one
level all the way thru. I can't compare it to his other
stuff tho.

I'm no big fan of vocal d&b myself but shake yer body wasn't
that bad! A lot of it is in the lower frequencies so won't
sound too hot through yer TV. He has done a wicked new tune
with T Power and Rodney P called "Ruff Like Me" or something
under the London Republic label which is very good. Vinyl
only though I think.

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2002-11-12 07:53 [#00438451]

I thought Shake Yer Body was wicked. So what if its pop? the
new one's cool too.

I'm gonna post a link to my d&b set when I finally sort it
out. I did one on sunday but the frickin minidisk cut out at
35mins so half of it didn't record! Bah crap technology!

I was quite enjoying it the first time I heard it on the
radio, but I got sick of it after about the second listen.
Way too simple, nothing to keep me interested for any period
of time.

The new one has some guy called MC Skibadee (sp?) scatting
all over it. And more bland female vocals.

Q: What do you call 100 Drum and Bass MCs at the bottom of
the ocean?

A: A good start.

offline diablo on 2002-11-12 08:44 [#00438485]

I think you'd probably prefer the harder stuff like Ram
Trilogy, Bad Company (BC Recordings) etc

offline diablo on 2002-11-12 08:47 [#00438489]
Points: 3242 Status: Lurker

A good d&b MC can really lift the set and get the crowd
hyped... however these are very few and far between, usually
they just get wrecked and ruin it. It winds me up.

Imo, drum & bass went to crap after 1996. 1995&1996
drum&bass was amazing and then its like the whole style
changed and started going in reverse it got simpler, in a
bad way.
Some good d&b: Subtropic- absolute black. Moving shadow
compilation Trans central connection-carlito&addiction, neil
trix, etc. Artcore 1 compilation. Metalheadz
platinumbreaks 1,2. adam f- colours.

I like the dark side of Drum n Bass.
yeah not very intelelctual, but sometimes can be fun. My
favorite artists are UFO!, Usual Suspects, Cause and
concern, RAM trilogy...umh practically the stuff that
dieselboy spins =P

basic hardstep is flooding the dancefloors here in france
and that's a pity because the few good d'n'bass producers
like radiobomb, interlope, subtiles record artists, etc...
are totally ingored by the kids.
Like spikee dragon I prefer oldschool jungle of shy fx & co,
back in mid-nineties.

Pomme de terre : your joke make me laugh a lot ;)
I often go off when a mc's coming upon the mic on a d'n'b
mix...

Well, as far as the conventional dnb goes, I like the old
stuff Photek produced. Modus Operandi is a must IMO, very
futuristic sounding.

And if your interested in live dnb check out FCS North.

Ah, I forgot an album that is definitely worth checking
out,

Plug - Drum 'n' Bass For Papa

Club oriented dnb is on the decline; experimental is where
it's at.

yeah Solaris was a phenomenal letdown. It created a nice
vibe, sorta.. Aside from a couple of strong tracks, (i.e.
Terminus, all the ambient stuff.. ) it was quite weak
though. The male diva vocals ruined it, sorry.. I hate to
make it so harsh but seriously. Even the house tracks
would've been fine if it wasn't for that.

A few DnB albums that I like:
"The Harder They Come (mixed by Grooverider)"
"Armageddon 1 and 2" I personally think #3 sux.
"Mysteryes of Funk" track #5 rules -Jack the Ripper.
"The Accidental Heroes - The stars of our destination"
"Brown Paper Bag - by Roni Size"

isnt enough!
