I'm finding it hard to do anything new with my music. I haven't got "writer's block"- I don't have any difficulty making new stuff, and it's not that it all sounds alike. I think it's the case that I have developed a particular routine and process which whilst it allows me to work reasonably quickly & efficiantly, feels stagnant and repetative, even if the end results are. This wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not finding making music as pleasurable as it used to be.
Anyone got any suggestions on how to get around this?

Ceri...I did the oddest thing to cure my writers block this weekend..
I took a total random BPM, put in totally random drums. Totally random ambience. And then sat and listened to it until I had a pattern in my head.
Then I started to remove the most annoying things. Tighten it up a bit. Made it to a real beat.
Then I started really working on it, and the result was one of my best to date.
try it mate ;)

I still have a new CD out in around a week. A friend picked a load of tracks I didn't do anything with.
Yeah Ceri, Force yourself to change your style and just mess around, Something will click.

Nope, won't have turntables till early march 2003 at the earliest :( I'm hoping to sample scratches from that and drop them into tracks on the PC.

you could , though its probably reasonably expensive .. get a loop record cut, with your own sample grooves / beats .. scratch that to bits.
but getting back to the stuck in a rut thing. i really don't know .. coz i'm in one at the moment .. sometimes reversing the working procedure makes things a bit more interesting .. mmm.. dunno - i'm with ya on this one.

He probablky meant: use I-ching as John Cage used it: let aleatoric, chance events influence your music making: free your music from shackles of your intentions etc.

I was thinking that, I could get a loads of samples from my PC etc/make loops in floops/acid/live and have a custom scratch record made up...
J-hok: What's "i-ching"? If you want to do italics in html you need: triangular bracket, "i", triangular bracket, text you want in italics, triangular bracket, forward slash, "i", triangular bracket.

I do try to use random stuff to alter it and occassionaly force myself to leave "errors" in if they sound okay. I used to make music when I was exhausted (this was cool as I'd often just look in my directory and find a few tracks/my old tracks updated with only a very hazy recollection of having made music the night before...) as a student, but when I have work the next day I don't like staying up too late.

i find the lotus position awfully painful, but yeah you might have a point. I was just thinking before that i generally only start with a rough idea, and take it from there, but maybe with this routine thing there might be a bit more of a preconception of what i want to do after all ... mmmhh.. i-ching eh? hehe

the time thing is the most limiting factor fo sho .. its the best when you stay up all night till doing a track - being immersed in the element.

It doesn't have to be lotus and I-chng. Stockhausen has done a lot of aleatoric music without resorting to I-ching... Aleatoric music is not necessarily good, of course. Morton Feldman reportedly stopped writing aleatoric pieces as he couldn't stand hearing what performers do to his scores. He was a gentle soul, he was.

I go about music by thinking of any ideas I have on a night and after a while the ones I remember after a few nights I'll try. I like my music to be organic as if they link to me in some hidden way so normally what you hear is my fingers manipulating what it can to make what I feel. If I could turn my thoughts into music i'd be making money from this by now but transferring your thoughts to something audible and worthwhile depends on your skill and your frame of mind. I cant make music when I'm worrying or down. I normally will have an impulse but I really should start making more music to work on my fading skill. Too much time off from music is a bad thing but a break is good. Think before you make and all that...
If I didn't work I'd be making more music and doing the thing I want to do. The thing I want to do right now is wake up tho *rubs face*

I can't wait to get some feedback on this new CD. I think it's dross but apparently it's my best work to date according to the guy who picked the tracks. I want to make stuff that makes you go 'What the fuck?' rather then sound like AE or Aphex Twin. I'm gonna send some stuff to Rephlex in the hope I make someone hit the floor laughing at the distorted dragon gabber. It's these reasons I make music, Fun, scare people, shows the side of me I don't talk about in code. Focus on why your making this music and explore the affects more, you can get a bigger picture of what you aim for. You may also need a joint before this makes sense.

Wow! That's pretty nice latency :)
I was talking to Michael Law (AKA Synfinity) at the weekend and he was singing the praises of his i-mac & quattro combo. He did a really good set at a small gig, mainly on keboards with a bit of logic on the mac to.

I notice the spelling of "Snaxx" is the same as the Dizzy spin-off game, "Kwik Snaxx", actually, maybe that's just one "x"...
Where do you get black CD-rs? Are they for "proffessional" PSX game piracy? :P
