lol, is the track called "schaap" or "schaar"? It's quite a difference ;-)
I'm listening to it know. Reminds me a little of fennesz, but i'm only in the first seconds... tell you more when it's finished.

okay i liked it. The track made me rather nervous though ;-) If that's what you set out to do, you managed it...
It sounds like the beauty is coming from very far away, and you can just hear it inbetween all the noise... i like that. Had to listen to it a few times before i could make out the melody, but now i'm getting it... yeah... nice song.
It still reminds me of fennesz. You probably already know him, but if you don't you should check that out :-) I can almost guarantee you'll love it!

its called "schaar". don't read too much in the title..
anyway, thanks for listening! the danger of this track is that the "noise" obliterates all - I do like to play around with that..
I've heard of fennesz, never actually heard anything by him. I'll give it a listen. :)

oh petty :-p I thought Schaap was a really cool title for a song ;-)
Yeah, i've always liked songs where the melody is not right upfront and the first thing you notice... it's often better (i think) if you only notice it after a while because it's obscured by other elements. A subtle melody instead of a grotesque one.
I think it's quite impressive for you to be able to write this song without having heard fennesz :-p I only have his album 'endless summer'... which sounds softer and more "dreamy" than your Schaar, but still the way he handles his melodies and his noises is similar to you, i thought.

That's funny, isn't it? That a half-heard or obscured melody can be so much more emotionally affecting than a blatant one, hmmmm?
To me the veiled melodies in a lot of really good electronic music aren't necessarily better as melodies than anything in pop music; it's the way you're forced to approach them that makes you appreciate them more deeply. They come as a relief from a thicket of noise, or like a revelation that made you rewire your brain to understand it.

Mark Linkous (of sparklehorse... i guess many people here won't know who the hell that is... hehe) once said in an interview that the most beautiful songs he has ever heard are the ones coming through the open kitchen-window from his neighbours' house, slightly obscured by the wind and mutilated by all the background noises. :-) (just listen to his song Chaos Of The Galaxy/Happy Man to hear what he means).
They come as a relief from a thicket of noise, or like a revelation that made you rewire your brain to understand it.
yes! Or maybe it is because you cannot hear 100% of the melody, and you have to use your own imagination to fill in the missing parts. I know i always do that when listening to fennesz... in my mind i hear alot more in that music than what's actually on the cd!
I haven't really been listening to alot of autechre yet, but the songs on Gantz Graf (their only release that i have) seem to have that same effect on me... really nice :-)

What sparklehorse do you recommend to a newbie ? I heard them live as a supporting act to Dave Gilmour in London but their sound rig was fucked and the excess bass killed the tunes. :(

the one i mentioned above is particularly great... Chaos of the Galaxy/Happy Man it seems to sum up alot of things i love about sparklehorse
Also:
spirit ditch (so beautiful...) heart of darkness maria's little elbows painbirds
and his louder side:
tears on fresh fruit ghost of his smile sick of goodbyes
The quiet songs are more special to me, i'd recommend those first. But sometimes you just wanna rock :-D Sparklehorse can help you with that too!

One time when i read back the next day what i had written that night, it ended with a part about little pink elephants... :-s (and i can garantue my project was not about little pink elephants!)... it was so weird... like i had already started dreaming but was still typing... i remember it was a confusing night... trying to fight my sleep, but i do not remember typing that strange part...
So yeah... turning a schaar into a schaap doesn't seem so bad :-p

The repeating pattern part sounded like it could be built up ala tri repetae into something really neat. The noise part was interesting but I think these two parts could work better seperately as individual tracks rather than having them try to complement eachother. All the sounds sound like the color grey sort of.

w M w:
"All the sounds sound like the color grey sort of." that probably hits the nail on the head. the sounds, although maybe not complementing eachother, are a bit 'sameish'. I'll have to work on that/at that.
"*rather than trying to have them complement...* .... since THEY aren't really even capable of trying...
maybe not (I don't think I agree with you), but I don't think they DO have to complement eachother in the way that you imply. I think the contrast can be interesting enough on itself.
and somehow I did think you would like the noisy part.. :)
I'm going back to writing now, surrounded, although I'm almost done, its going really well :)

It was too subtle and unimportant to notice but the purpose of my second post was to change this sentence:
"...rather than having them try to complement eachother." into "rather than trying to have them complement eachother." (moved the word "trying" since the unconscious PARTS aren't capable of trying.) eh heh heh
Don't worry you'll be back in a few minutes rather than doing your assignment.

you probably won't be able to fall asleep tonight i guess... :-s It sucks when your dayrhytm is messed up like that.
cool that you like the sparklehorse-track :-) I've never heard it in any film... but who knows? It's possible i suppose.
I was listening to that album earlier tonight... it is really great... The moment in that song (galaxy chaos/happy man) when the noise clears up and the song becomes clearer always leaves me feeling a little bittersweet...
On the one hand i wished he would have kept it noisy and obscured for the entire track. But on the other hand it is a really powerful moment! It always puts a big grin on my face... it's like suddenly you stepped into the room where sparklehorse is playing, and before you were hearing the music from another room... i love it! The entire song!
