Hi,
I've been making music for years now for fun...my friends (who are into electronic music, like me) keep telling me I should make a go of "becoming famous"...Well, I don't really think I'm the sort of person who would EVER become famous...but I would like a small record deal, just so I can share my music with an audience. Trouble is, I'm fine with the making of music...but I don't have a clue how to "get in". I have no connections, haven't been on the radio, or anything. Please, help me...where do I start? Do I just sort of...send a cd off to a random company?
Help would be most appreciated, thanks....

I think we're entering a time where this just won't really happen anymore. THere's too much competition and too much good music already available and too many options like soulseek to get it free.

my friends played a gig last sunday (i had to play d.bass for them too :D) and this american guy - Jason Anderson / Wolf Colonel - said that he really liked them and that he would talk to his record company about them, maybe a deal or something if they were impressed.
So there's always chance, with all the crap that's out there.....

dont listen to wMw, thats bollox.
make as many copies of a good quality recording of your tracks as you can.
maybe try a four track cd, an EP's worth of tracks. make sure you are totally happy with your recording, it'll wreck your head if you get too far down the line and you realize you dont like this or that.
buy 50-100 blank cd's and make copies' do artwork if you want but just make sure you make a label with ALL your details on, name, address, postcode, tracklist.
then buy a listings mag, i think i read in the KLF book there's a magazine that comes out one every 2 or 3 months with a list of all record labels, but saying that, a quick search on google and you'll find hundreds of labels with adresses to send demo's.
then sort your copyright out. i think you can mail a sealed copy back to yourself and dont open it, store it away. or i think you can go to the bank and get them to stamp and store a copy for you.
then go out and buy 50-100 1st class stamps and envelopes that will take a cd, bubble wrap envelopes.
then post ALL of the fuckers!!! along with a little note or if you want, a gimmick, fuck knows what? use your imagination if you've got the money.
POST THEM ALL!!! to the list of labels that you've got. then sit back, and if your tunes are good enough, you'll have someone willing to release something. maybe you'll get loads of knockbacks, but from people i know, along with the knockbacks usually comes some essential advice from the guys and gals who run the labels.
just keep at it.
good luck!!
ps. you can also go that internet route with all that mp3 nonsense, but i havent got an igloo about any of that shit.

i only know the 2 ways i mentioned above, but a quick search on google you'll probly find alot of info, but i think its dodgy teritory copyright, i think just do the basics and you'll be ok.
i know what you mean about babies, they'yre precious things, gotta take care of them.

don't you have the software data you used to make it? this is unextractABLE from the mp3 so it's proof u made it. Of course you're using software someone else made on a computer someone else made, it'd be a shame if their babies were nicked.

So, if I have all the Cakewalk Sonar files on my pc (which I do) with all the audio/midi data, then I can prove it's mine?

WHat can you possibly make that will be able to stand out from everything else? Is there really that big a demand for something that is in such a great supply (for free)? Will people go out of their way to pay you money for something they can get for free (they might not get your specific creations for free, but creations of equal interest from others are aplenty I'm sure) THe only people that'll support you with money are your friends and/or relatives. I say or because I have no relatives (the alien beings I belong to don't reproduce your way)

i dunno, how much would your soul cost?? do you think you could rent it out?? i think i'd do a oneoff big sellout move if it meant i could not have to earn another single penny for the rest of my life.
they reckon you could live on 640,000 pound for the rest of your life and not earn a penny more, so i dunno, one big payoff and your gone!! away to do what the fuck you want for the rest of your life!!
I'D DO IT!!!!!!

I'd just play videogames all day. I'd probably never go outside if I didn't have to. You could fashion a toilet so it works as a bed too (and have servants flush it for you)

i buy shitloads, and there's shitloads and shitloads of other people like you and me who also buy shitloads and shitloads of tunes so there is a living to be made if you've got the tunes, and that's all it comes down to, if you've got the tunes!!

if i hear a tune that i like, i will buy it on vinyl partly just out of respect for the person who made it and partly just because i love buying records. Most of witch, i download mp3's of first, to decide if i like it, i do buy less cd's now but i make up the difference in vinyl, witch i also buy over the net. as that is far easyer for me cos i live out in the sticks
