We're working on a much better and easier-to-use solution
for this. Thanks for all donations, we'll let you know how
to post pictures as soon as things are sorted!

why not letting us host our avatars ourself?

how is the size limit for us? they take up such a small
amount of space, they're not a problem even for people on
modems. if they're for your site to run better that's fine,
but that's not what you're saying.

Ha ha, when I connect via my dreamcast or my mum's laptop I
certainly appreciate people having small avatars :)

Maybe the best compromise would be to have a space for a
bigger picture on the profile of "premium" account holders?
That way people could have a real pic of themselves etc. w/o
slowing the MB loading down?

tits:
"take up such a small amount of space"

yes, individual avatars are now 12 kb. multiply that with 10
or 12 and you have 120 kb's downloading just for avatars.
even that is much. imagine what happens with 100+ messages
topics.

before the limit was implemented, some people were having
100 kb avatars. multiply that with 10 and you have 1 Mb of
unnecessary bandwidth eaters.

the size of avatars is a good rule, and should stay
implimented in the future

The site has a very clean, consistent look to it. I think
the avatars are big enough and for people w/ slower
computers, all the animation and stuff will really slow it
down.

"it's a numbers game but the chips don't add up somehow."

first, don't browsers just keep images in their cache that
they keep referring to?

second, 120kb is not much, even on a modem.

third, people have the option of displaying only 25 messages
per screen, it's their own fault if they display 100 (or 50)
at a time when they have a slow connection.

fourth, i think it's more important to make the graphics on
the site smaller sized than the avatars. i'd rather have
lots of different avatars with a bigger file size limit than
pretty but hefty web site images that never change.

I like the size consistency though. On other messageboards
they have avatars of all different sizes and it looks like
shit.

it's not a 100% rule.

second, 120kb is not much, even on a modem.

I would say it's much if you have a look a the
form/function/use.

third, people have the option of displaying only 25
messages
per screen, it's their own fault if they display 100 (or 50)

at a time when they have a slow connection.

When did the avatars turned more important than the actual
messages setup?

fourth, i think it's more important to make the graphics
on

pretty but hefty web site images that never change.

This might come as a surprise for you, but the site's
graphics size is equal to 3-4 avatars.

finally, you can do a lot with 12 kb - if you know how to do
it.

ok xlr, we don't need any "yes" men here, phobia can speak
for himself (as can your avatars, which look crisp at under
12k)

phobia: thanks for your replies (although i wonder if you're
taking my suggestions seriously or just knocking them down).
as for #3, if people are complaining about avatars slowing
down their page loads then it's only practical for them to
not display so many messages at once. the avatar size
wouldn't be a problem if these people used good sense. the
page graphics are sleek and i know they're sized down but
i'm just saying, it makes more sense to me to size them down
further than to limit avatar size to 12k which can be too
small (it's hard to do animation w/ 12k).

That's me fucked then. I made a lovely one but it's 127KB at
it's smallest I wouldn't even dream of uploading that even
if we did ahve bigger avatars. Stick to your guns Phob.

They can't be sized down further. As you can see, each
picture has only 3-4 colors (except for the header) and are
saved adaptively. The site-graphics are not the problem
here, since they are equal to 3-4 avatar (in kb's) - so it's
pretty clear that the "problem" is related to the avatars.

I think the size limit isn't so bad actually. It basically
'forces' someone to be much more creative with a lot less to
use up

like this mb for the nice ppl and for the interesting
xltronic topics,
I found this board different from all the others and very
special. I'm not sure that post with pics could be an
importan improvement or innovation anyway we can try...

Avatars are great how they are...but you can chnage them
anyway you want, Phobes. They'll still be great. Is this the
