hey, Ive ben thinking about this for a while now..

Do you have to get a musical edeucation to be able to make
good electronic music, or is it just a allot of imagination
and creativity behind the best electronic artsist ?

well there's Zeus whos getting an education in it..and then
there's the rest of us...
I dont think you need an education just a good ear and the
abilityand willingness to push the envelope..

but I am cheating here..I did take quite a few music
lessons..about a decade ago..and dont remember jack out of
that..

The purpose of philosophy is to find the right questions.
The other branches of science try to answer those questions.

You have asked the wrong question.

most of the time you end up teaching yourself stuff.

For me, having any sort of musical education would take the
fun out of exploring new thnigs.

I agree - having a basic framework of 'education', either
from another person, or from a book, can be a useful
springboard for your adventures in sound

ah but you do not need it. in my opinion the most important
thing is a genuine interest in sounds themselves..

I think a lot of people start to quickly on structure, not
so much on the actual sounds they use.

I think the problem with a lot of the idm i hear is that
they use cool sounds but they're not really songs.

Or maybe I just dno't like soundscapes enough.

maybe then the problem is you are expecting 'songs'.

I think 'idm' (or whatever) has the potential to outgrow the
normal song structure.

You don't have to get an education to write good electronic
music. anyone can program for 8 hours a day and make
killing shit. just like an instrument, you don't have to go
to college to study viola, you can just practice at home.
its the education, this history, the connections, the
venue..... ya know, on and on. whos to say whats better?

horse dung. science is not at all concerned with answering
the questions that philosophers are concerned with.
scientists are pragmatic. they find out how things work
that need to be known in order to advance in technological
and western magic bullet medicine. they observe and make a
model according to the observations but are afraid to
consider the implications the findings have on reality. i'm
being an ass 'cause not ALL scientists are going on in this
manner, but damn near.

sorry, you just touched on the very reason i am considering
leaving my formal studies of chemistry and biology behind
for something more worth while.

inspiration enough.

of course you dont need an education to make good music.

beatles, aphex twin... hell, the list is way too long.

for me, i am studying music because it opens new doors.
there is stuff that im learning, that would taken me much
longer to discover on my own.

you learn things, but you are not forced to use them. you
use what you want. you learn things that perhaps you wanted
to do, but didnt know how.

to me it doesnt matter. weather you are just messing around
and making music by experimenting, or you study music, it
doesnt matter. If its good music, thats all that matters.

all the great composers of classical music were taught, and
they made great music.

alot of the "pop" (not pop, but mainstream (including idm)
never had lessons before.

on the other hand, lots of people have learned about
composition, and didnt make anything good

and alot of people try to teach them selves, and dont
succede making good music. (if we can even label music good
or bad... but you get my point)

so... yeah.

I've heard some very interesting things from people that
didn't have any sort of formal training, and I think that in
itself is what made it sound so interesting.

So yeah... having an education is music isn't a bad thing at
all, but you shouldn't always go by the books.

I pretty much quoted some guy on the show "big thinkers" on
tech tv. He was a philosopher so he probably was biased, and
used careful wording to make his branch of study to seem the
most important. Actually my post made sense at the time, but
now it seems almost as pointless as the original message.
And also I th
*suddenly leaves without finishing the conversation

I'm studying composition at the conservatory and I find that
ever since I study there I make more and more progress. So
for me, it helps. But it's basically about learning
techniques and stuff like that. My teacher doesn't learn me
how to compose though or otherwise I would end up composing
just like him, or not at all.
In my opinion, you don't have to have an education in music
in order to compose it. You just need your imagination and
the will to create it.
