Why do they do it?

i was wondering, is there any reason all these techno / idm
artists give their songs such odd names? it seems to be the
most popular thing to do among them all from what i've
seen.. songs like 'giggly dooper', 'baga wiz', 'nipnip', and
so on.. those arent real im just giving examples

anyone know why they do it though?

It's still better than "Move Your Body", or "Dance to the
Music", or "Move to the Beat", or "Dance and Move your Body
to the Beat of the Music".

I have no idea. Why they name the names they name their
songs. I think it's mostly ramdom or the first word or word
they think of when hearing the song.

true, just curious as to why gibberish names though, seems a
bit uncreative with as talented as some of the artists are
with the music itself

maybe its to discourage people using kazza/etc since most
songs off of drukqs for example are harder to get than say
songs off of SAW, mainly due to misspelling of names or not
adding numbers or symbols,etc...SAWs tracks are easy to
spell in comparason.

i think it is pointless
i dont like it
give me " shake it baby shake it " anytime
just give the songs track 1 track 2 ...instead of hgdfk or
bhggyt

well the tracks mostly then show up in the form of "drukqs -
1, drukqs - 2 etc" so it doesn't really help.

maybe they don't want a description or a suggestion of what
the track is meant to evoke? such as SAWII being all
untitled. and gibberish track names might discourage
prejudicial images floating thru the old noggin...*BLAH*

i dont write songs, but to me it would be easier to name
songtitles where there's actual singing on them. as most
idm artists only create instrumental tracks, i dont know how
they would decide the titles with actual words.

i cant imagine an autechre track titled "i wanna hold you
hand" or "love me do"...

yes but you can just use existing words..

ae mostly get their tracknames from individual
soundfilenames..

like Ophecks said in another topic, autechre aren't so bad
with their titles. those can somewhat make sense. but stuff
like on Drukqs.. it's just crap scrambled up, to us at
least, maybe not to rdj

joga
cocoon
pluto
songs by bjork that has nothing to do with titles sometimes
nirvana has song titles that has nothing to do with the
songs
if they want to call their songs bgfhg they can but in amber
that wasnt the case
uziq and plaid have "proper" titles

Like I said on another topic two seconds ago, Autechre is my
fave track namers... cool words that aren't unpronouncable
or anything.

BOC has cool track titles that conjured up mental images
even before I heard the songs... this kind of skews my
opinion when I'm listening to them, though, you know? I
can't listen of 'Turqoise Hexagon Sun' without picturing
some colorful sunrise or sunset, which is kind of annoying
sometimes...

are most of the songs on Drukqs acctually cornish words?
(rdj lives in cornwall)

i definitely agree though to some extent. i mean maybe like
on just 1 or 2 albums you make up some screwball titles like
Fidgjdjy Scrudk v38/3.x or whatever, but to continually do
it on every single release.. it just looks like a lack of
creativity then to me

To me, track titles are as unimportant as this issue. I can
call them "Cool Trak" or "Fimligidlz Wathnielr V.213", it
doesnt matter. I dont think its stupid or anything.

cornish words? so, "petiatil hx cditutudutu" or whatever is
a real word?

yeah, that's what I was meaning - the image is implanted
beforehand.

Alex, my track names - well, mostly I just think of a name
that I like, then apply to a track ;) but some, like Worlds
Within Worlds, are technical descriptions of the concept :D
Blind Torture Kill was the name of a serial killer... a
particular favourite of mine :)

offline BILE from São Paulo (Brazil) on 2002-10-25 14:10 [#00417019]

in my opinion though i just think if they go through all
that work and effort to make such a great song, why not give
it a proper title? i mean i can understand wanting to be
different and have unusual names, but it seems like
every idm artist does it now. somebody else made a
good point though, if it's a rock band or some such, then
giving it names like "love me do" makes sense, but since for
the most electronic music doesn't have words, it would be a
lot harder to think of a real name that fits

Sometimes (like in BOC's case) artists give their tracks
titles that mean something to them - but might not mean
anything to you.

the DrukQs tracks are in Kernawek (sp?), an ancient Cornish
dialect.

offline BILE from São Paulo (Brazil) on 2002-10-25 14:12 [#00417025]

but still, i was just giving Drukqs as an example of odd
song titles

squarepusher and basically every person on this mb who makes
electronic music give their songs gibberish titles. i mean
they look like gibberish to most people, whether it has
meaning to the creator or not

if i ever do an album i'll call the tracks:

1. #*&fuck984984089weeeeeeePONG_*%!!
2. talking to a foamy mouse with wings in a boat made of
dragon-proof silver
3. i am the mighty puyo of death and oblivion
4. -**/*-+**
5. untitled track #854895612084 (fruit salad and vinegar
mix)
6. please listen to this track, it will make me very happy!
7. @ & é " ' ( § è ! ç à ) -
8. the best track in the world.
9. move your fucking beat along to your bodily music and cut
your nails off before you dance inside my room
11. fuck off (remixed by me and my cat)
12. hymn to the glory of ellen feiss (a track i made when i
was stoned)
13. bing bong ping pong weeeeeeee!!! @#&+***,/:=+

well that's true too, i mean if it's a great song then
really the title doesn't matter in the long run. my original

do it that way

"neato" is a good word..

as you know, the titles I pick are dutch words and I pick
those for how they sound and how they look when printed -
not so much the meaning.
