Most people would agree that they listen to different types of musics in different situations- somthing ambient/classical for mealtimes, mainly instrumental stuff for talking with friends, more loud and energetic stuff when at a club etc.
I'm interested in peoples opinions on different music media. Personally I think due to the fact that vinyl is so short (you need to turn the record over so frequently...) and it practically demands to be mixed you tend to listen most to music on vinyl, as you are rarely doing something else at the same time.
CDs are longer and most players have a loop & programming function. This makes them more appropriate for background music, although the fact you can program them means people sometimes skip tracks, shortening the potential length...
MDs are pretty much the same as CDs, but as people make their own compilations, they seem to like all tracks and hence rarely skip them. This would make them slightly more suitable as "background" media, but they don't seem ti be more poopular than Cds...
MP3s seem the best media for background music- small files size and ease of playlist ordering means custom playlists that can run for days. This makes them ideal for background for study/work as you aren't interrupted by having to change the CD etc. the small file size also means that you can fit 10/12 hours on a single CD making it my media of choice for car trips.
What're your media preferences for different situations?

I like listening to mp3s for background when I'm stoned but the white noise from my computer pisses me off. When a VDU is on all I can hear is that fucking high pitched tone also. So I either program or play thru a CD or put vinyl on (having to get up to flip it over keeps me awake/alert)

Spikee - Back to the topic about vinyl vs MP3 - the noise coming from my computer is what I find really annoying with MP3s + the noise induced by the soundcard.
Anyone tried to mix with Traktor ? It's quite fun but to have the real DJ feel you need 2 soundcards. The automatic BPM calculation is quite efficient but the scratch function is ridiculous (unless you use a force feedback mouse ...)

I know what you mean, I need MP3s playing really loud to drown out computer noise, or at least to listen through headphones. This is part of the reason I want closed back sennheiser cans :)
I like listening to MP3s on my MP3 cd player though... really good audio quality after listening to them on PC.

i rarely do something else whilst listening to music. i'd be too distracted by the music to concentrate on something else.
this makes listening to music verrrrry time consuming for me....
when i'm at a friends place, or at a bar, it's not that bad that there is music (though, i was once in a bar where they didn't play any music, how wonderful that was...)

I have a force feedback mouse (I haven't had it working since I got traktor) and you're right- it's nothing like real scratching.
I was playing about with traktor last night with the crossfader linked to my midi controller. good as you can scratch/crossfade at the same time, but feels weird.
Why do you need 2 soundcards? If you have one with front & back outputs (surround) can't you just plug headphones in the back and speakers out of the front ones?

ah yes the surround function.
I think it's time for me to confess that my soundcard is a old IDE one. It's a shame I know but I'm waiting for a little cash so That I can build a new PC from scratch and buy a semi-pro sound card (something like a m-audio).

Swap you 25 vinyls for a turntable :) I've got loads of cool old vinyl like 808 state, tricky disco, etc. inherited it from my brother. I've got some original hendrix & beatles too :)
Neeta: What are the cordless sennheisers like (quality wise) compared to say, sennheiser HD-250s? and do they eat batteries? Cheers.

Audigy platinium - this is what I have at work. The only little problem I see with it - the ADC & DAC converters are still inside the PC so you get all the electrostatic noise from your fan + harddrive . If you have a little bit more money look for a soundcard in two parts -> PCI interface for logic and control + external rack for Inputs/Outputs and converters. That may be over 500£ :-/

Ah, you only have a single turntable...
Giginger, naw I was just kidding. I like them too much & I'll have a load of records to get started with when I get decks :)
str_ph: I thought there was a soundcard similair to the audigy, but geared more towards music than games that was 2 seperates for £180ish. Someone here posted a link the other day... Anyone remeber which one it was (NB it wasn't creative labs...)
Glass eater- 320kbps MP3s :)

Get an mp3 cd player- Only £50 (even with anti-shock) and get a player & 12 CD holder case and you'll be able to take 120+ albums at 128kbps quality... also not to expensive to replace if it gets stolen (my mate just had his CD player & original cds stolen whilst travelling...)

yeah, totally agreed....Phillips do a great little one for £50 which is a total bargain (I've got it's older brother which gets used daily....best little bit of tech I ever bought...)...
I'm more or less 100% MP3 nowdays...bought CDs are ripped & LAME encoded & I seldom listen to the CD straight...most of my listening is on the way to & from work, good 1hr each way which I kinda enjoy in a way - like enforced meditation...reading & music & watching the world...
At home, it's generally MP3s either thru my MP3CDplayer or Winamp on the computer....got a great Yamaha Sub-bass & speaker set that suit IDM perfectly; nice & clear at low & high volume ?
Got some decent Technics Headphones for late-night coding sessions...not as good texturally as the Yamaha but pretty close...

I got one from maplins for £50 it's by Lennoxx (sounds mickey mouse doesn't it), but no complaints, dead reliable, comes with rechargeble batteries & mains adaptor, good battery life & 120 secs anti shock. It has *never* skipped playing mp3s and only once whilst playing normal cds (and that was with anti-shock off).
I want some sennheiser HD-250s as they'd be good on my pc as well as for when I get decks, I'm considering some cordless ones though... hence the question to neeta. Ideally I'd like some that you could connect by wire to stop the need for battery & give better signal, but that you could then disconnect & use cordless as well. Don't know of any like that though.
I listen to music in the car to work, but I really miss reading on the bus in (used to in school all the time). I really get what you're on about with "forced meditation", hits the nail on the head.
