Currently i only own their 'music has the right to children album'... and i would almost say i am obsessed with it!
It's an amazing record... one of the best ever made. It's not even in the same league as all the other warp-artists. Boards of Canada speaks to me on a subconscious level. I listen to it every night as i fall asleep... and also many times during the day ofcourse. I can hardly imagine life without this record anymore.
The dilemma is that i'm not really sure if i should also buy the beautiful place EP and/or geogaddi. Part of me wishes they would have just made this one album and then split up... one unique masterpiece. I fear that when i listen to their other albums it will somehow make the magic dissapear. There was a thread the other day about how MHTRTC contained something undefinable (magic if you will) that geogaddi lacks.
What are your experiences with this? I am now still in the position that i've only heard MHTRTC and nothing else... should i keep it that way? Or doesn't it loose it's magic, even if i should find i don't like geogaddi as much?
I can only make this decission once... after i've heard geogaddi there's no going back, i can't erase the experience from my memory. I'm really being serious here! BOC is very special to me, it's not like i "quite like" their album... it's one of the most important albums i've ever had the privilige of buying! So i'm seriously worried about it... everytime i listen to mhtrtc i think: "how could they possibly follow this up? It's perfect as it is!"

that's how most, including BoC themsleves felt about My Bloody Valentine and 'Loveless', of course that *was* their last album wasn't it? :-)
As far as your dilemme goes, I'm not sure what to say. Geogaddi didn't diminish the first for me .. I felt it was a little inferior, but don't let our opinions sway you.. some people thought Geogaddi was the brilliant one. MHTRTC is like an entity of its own that will exist forever in its own universe.. nothing can tough it or even resemble it..

surrounded- im feeling the same, i dont want to make the mistake of gettting geogaddi and having it "let down" my thoughts of boards of canada. i think you should get the peel sessions disk and beautiful place e.p., the e.p. is WONDERFUL.
ive listened to geogaddi and im sure i will get it, just dont want to see the lame side of boc, but then again there are some aphex twin songs, that seem do dissapoint me also
but if i do get geogaddi now, im thinking that when twoism comes out it will bring back the images of proper boc

Think of it like this:
Music has the right to children is a breakfast cereal that holds up to twenty cigarettes, inflates into a dinghy and can only be operated by a trained professional.
But, Geogaddi is a robot that detects police sonar!
So the moral of the story is.. MHTRTC may get you into the water, but Geogaddi is whats going to keep you from getting arrested.

Normally I'd suggest you stick with blissful ignorance, but in this case you'd seriously be missing out on some great music if you choose not to listen to it. If you do decide to take the risk, make sure you get the version that includes 'from one source all things depend' at the end. I personally like Boc Maxima and Geogaddi more than MHTRTC. Boc Maxima sounds like a more rough, homegrown version of MHTRTC while Geogaddi sounds like it perfected the sound of MHTRTC and took it even further.

this is where people get tripped up
geogaddi is made with the same formula as MHTRTC... and so people where just like "its more of the same"
but if you actually listen... they are worlds apart.
while MHTRTC is like a blissful dream... geogaddi is like a nightmare...
but the differences are subtle and subconcious.. so on the surface, it sounds not as good... but its just because its not giving you feelings of bliss... but feelings of darkness and evil.
i look at them like ying and yang

I like the dream/nightmare analogy. BoC doesn't seem complete unless you have both albums. They complement each other beautifully.
I don't see why everyone puts down Geogaddi. It's an incredible album. You won't be disppointed.

Hey now, there's nothing wrong with being weird! Remember that!
And thanks for all your advices people. Especially what Zeus said keeps ringing in my head... that's a really beautiful way to put it! Music... as a beautiful dream, and geogaddi a nightmare. Sort of keeping each other in balance...hm... yeah, i really like that thought! And it's made me even more curious of geogaddi.
And since no-one has actually said that they regret buying geogaddi... i've made up my mind, i'm gonna buy it... for better or for worse.
"Every action is a positive action, even if it has a negative result."
That is so true... it's better to regret something you did, than something you didn't do :-)
And all you people have convinced me enough that geogaddi is not simply a lesser version of MHTRTC, but a whole new and different kind of artwork. So even though i can't be sure i'll like it, it probably won't disturb my MHTRTC-experience :-)
Thanks again, and i'll let you know what i think of it once i've heard it! And if it by does ruin my image of BOC... well... then i'll always have to live with the thought that qrtr tried to warn me about this, but i wouldn't listen ;-)

Geogaddi is so much better that MHTRTC.
BUT, I think it depends which you hear first. When I heard MHTRTC was much more melodically based I thought: 'Yeah!' and what happened? The melodies are just as hard to grasp, but good nonetheless. Still, Geogaddi is the fuckign daddy because it has The Beach at Redpoint, Dawn Chorus, Over the Horizon Radar, You Could Feel the Sky and A Is to B As B Is to C. Only song I don't like is Alpha and Omega, because that is pants.

Thanks.

i like that title... dawn chorus... mm... it sounds so poetic. Even without having heard the music.
However, what is that different version you talked about? With an extra song? (from one source all things depend)... i knew there was a limited edition-version of geogaddi in a digipack... but i thought the tracklists were the same?
