so i met this kid on the internet, from around my area, who wanted to collaborate on music- but then he backed out, 'cause he's a pussy, here's the letter i sent him (enjoy) :::
just as a followup i'd like to express my bewilderment at your resignation- i suppose i've done worse, but i really don't think you're doing it for the right reasons. for starters, granted my computer based electronic music, has idm (my accused genre) tendencies and eccentricites, but that's not something that's set in stone, i've been anti-label since i was 12. I've written at least as many lyrical compositions as i have house tracks/ trance tracks/ and piano tunes (when i was younger that is), and the demeanor of my live, hardware based music is anything BUT idm- i know from a non-electronic prespective the whole patterns thing might seem a lot like spinning records, but most people i know consider it to be the healthy alternative there of...
hm... well i'd really like to work with you, or anyone, that isn't bogged down by musical "expertise" or "rock philosophy" (sounds like an oxymoron when u think of the origins for the term "rock 'n' roll"), but i suppose i'm in no position to twist arms
i'm just hoping that even if u ignore this email- and don't collaborate with me on any level (association between producers of any two kinds of music can be powerful, the website links themself are an untapped goldmine) that you'll at least remember this for the next time you back out of a chance to express yourself, and learn new strategys for your music
said it before, so i'll say it again good luck
p.s. this is the last email- i won't harass u any more, and if u don't call me in a week or so i'll take your # off my cell phone.

Good letter. Polite and not too pushy, but gets the point across. What was his reasoning? Electronic music is too generic/unskillful for him to get involved in?
My gf said at the weekend that, "Electronic music isn't hard to make, it's all done on eJay type packages. It just takes time to get something sounding good rather than skill". In a way, I agree, with a computer continually playing a pattern, you can just play round (or even hit "randomise") till you get something good. Then repeat the process till you get patterns that work well with it or copy the original and make slight changes. However, if you took that approach you'd be really making music by numbers, like painting on top of a blown up photo rather than getting the sound from your head down...

I disagree a bit there. i make music a bit complex, and the randomness/change-patterns-a-bit way, is not all that stupid. Sometimes I hit the exact feeling i like by messing around with random sounds untill the lightbulp over my head says 'pling' and an idea evolves

i suppose it's the difference between deciding which patterns (of the ones you've randomized (alter note, in reason)) to use, and creating which patterns, and from my experience- people can't tell the difference.
who fuckin' cares anyways? if it sounds good it sounds good- rock artists have stupid little shortcuts they use too.
oh and he didn't want to collaborate with me 'cause the mp3s i have up on httP://store.mixonic.com/diemaxisbetterthanme apparently lacked room for him to extend his full level of skill
whatever the hell that means.

oh and btw- i'd challenge any person who says stuff about how easy it is to make electronic music, to actually make a track w/ programming that's unfamiliar to them
fuck it only takes a few minutes to write a guitar song that doesn't mean it's a good song (sorry, i'm on an angry tangeant today)

I know what you mean, I'll often do the random thing to get a starting point then build on it from there. It's usually just getting a good synth preset by knpb twiddling that inspires a track for me.
Diemax: I have a load of ejay software (I won them in a music competition) and made 2 track that were alright (one of them was really rather good) too and it does take some getting used to.

haha, my brother would smack u and yeah ejay did take some getting used to, but i can still say that i made 4 tracks w/ out any of their loops and i figured out how to break a beat into triplets in their shite, secondhand program.

Why would your bro smack me?
I found the feature I used most was the making your own loops one in techno ejay 2, I hated the idea of purely using samples...
I'd used far more complex stuff (acid & Rebirth) before I got into ejay so I found it quite limiting from the offset. Still, you get people that reckon floops is limiting (even with the plugins)/toy software...

I'm hoping to get reason tonight (hint, hint, SSers pls. email me ;) ) as I've heard good things about it and fancy a change for when I get floopers block (I don't plan to change over, just have another tool).

that's the way to do it get cubase, u can streamline 'em both and year reason 2.0 kicks ass i'd marry it if it didn't keep giving me odd error messages (+ sex through a midi input can be painful when you're as well endowed as i am)

Ha ha, I want to be able to re-wire re-birth into it too. Should be fun...
Also I'll be able to have a monster stack of virtual machines (I know, I know, you can make good music with just a couple...) onscreen at 1600*1200 resolution :o)
Odd error messages? Surely you don't have a "copy"? What's the main difference in reason 2 from 1. Also is recycle any good? (I liked the demo).

recycle helps w/ reason a lot- it's perfect for fuckin' up grooves and loops to resequence w/ a dr.rex player
the main difference, is reason 2.0 is better suited for double screening (u can seperate the rackwindow from the master sequencer window) and 2 devices, also some tools for editing- the main difference, imo is sound quality.
and i own a purchased copy, but my computer is too slow, and reason has the good grace to tell me this every time i try to play a complicated song- of course, it doesn't overdo it, just one error message, then stop, then play, and it works fine again

I'm glad you replied. Please don't think I have any resentment to talking with you about my
reasoning, or just talking per se. I'll respond to some of the points you brought up: firstly,
I don't even know what "IDM" means. I know there's a huge gulf between scratching vinyl and
what you do, and what you do is highly enjoyable and provocative to listen to...the main reason
I'm backing out is because the relatively static nature of sequenced music and drum machines
(when compared to just playing an acoustic guitar, unamplified, live, alone) would be difficult
to adapt to in a performance situation. I know what Electribes are capable of, and aside from
ring modulation filters and incidental handclaps, there are severe limits to what they can bring
to improvisation. There needs to be some element that is completely out of sync, not quantized
at all, but also fully appropriate to the moment. For that, you need a little musical training,
and some melodic instrument.
Again, this is purely relative to what I'm looking for; most classical music is utterly immune
to any kind of chance whatsoever, but I still love it for other reasons. Similarly, d'n'b and
trance are fantastic examples of continuity and order, but not emotion so much. Your aversion
for "rock philosophy" and "expertise" bogging people down is no different from my love of rock
philosophy and expertise, and I wouldn't expect you to jump into a situation that felt
counter-productive to you, solely to "express yourself, and learn new strategies for your
music." This is just to defend my position; not that I wouldn't benefit somehow from working
with you, but in the adjustment period I would probably lose touch with my more familiar
territories. I hope we can still talk about this and other things--the musician and the person
are totally different entities, as a general rule. It's not like breaking up with a girl and
you never want to see her again. So, if you feel like anythin
g needs bringing up, or that

What a monkey. He obviously doesn't know te joys of improve electronica with a midi controller. Buffoon. Besides, you can always "detune" the tempo of a drum machine to give it that inaccurate human effect :)

or add a non-tempo based delay or restart on cue with the music for odd t/s or run one device as midi master so i can control all the other channels w/ one keyboard...
i honestly don't know what this kid's thinking of i know anyone else would just ignore my insults and pleas, or succumb to their mindshattering power- but why reply to argue semantics on a topic he's not familiar with? jesus christ if i keep thinking like this i'm going to end up a thunk.
